Took the Merlin up the Snowbasin climb today. Started early but it still got pretty hot mid-ride. First time up since the latest knee replacement and I was happy to have the 34/32 combo for when it got steep. The worse being about 12% grade. Pretty nice up near the top when the breeze blew.
The hardest part is done when you top the first crest and see this below: The road is blocked off to traffic right before this point so the rest of the way you climb free of any traffic: Today's ride, an 18 lb Merlin sporting Wickwerks 53/34 chainrings, mostly Dura Ace 9 speed build with a SRAM 11-32 cassette: Wheeler Canyon, a 2 mile trail takes you back into valley through this canyon: More of the view along the second section of the climb: Still going up: Large open meadow up top by the Lodge: Creek peppered with beaver ponds: The final climb back out of here is along the ridge in the background there: |

Lazy ride for fun today on the 1985 Raleigh Team USA. This one is set up right now as more of a gravel bike. Today's route was mainly the bike path with some gravel sections sprinkled in and even single track paths in one nature area.
Superbe RD, FD, and brakes with a Velo Orange 48/34 crank and Sram 8 speed 11-30 cassette. Was really surprised to find out the Superbe RD could handle this cassette just fine. Gravelking SK 700 x 35 tires clear just fine mounted to the Sirocco wheels. Rec area at the lake: Early morning empty beach: Heading into the woods: Off road, the rails on this saddle are suspended in bushings to smooth out the bumps: More along the single track: Bike path in the nature area: One of the hottest and driest area's of the valley: It's haymaking time up here too: |

Decided to give the Poprad a try today on the North Fork route. Lots of gravel and climbing at the top end of the valley. I still haven't been able to pedal one 100 meter section leading into the park since the knee surgeries. Felt bad about that today but then checked the ride files. The Garmin shows it over 23% grade there so I don't feel that bad. Like on the ride the other day I had two or three times today where the heart felt like it was racing and I seemed to want to black out. That is not a norm for me. They were after hard climbs sections when I stopped to grab some pics. HR monitor didn't show anything unusual though. I've got an annual physical next week at the VA clinic so I'll mention this. I do have to admit that the mechanical discs on the Poprad were superior to those early Superbe calipers on the Team USA bike.
Sat out here after the ride with the laptop and ate lunch while watching the end of today's TDF stage. * |

did a 76 miler before the air got too bad. Not really loving the Gravelking ss's. feel sluggish even at the high end of psi per RH calculator.
