. . . I was up in the North Creek area in the Adirondacks of upstate New York and had a wonderful ride on one of my favorite routes. It’s 37 miles of mostly back woods, lightly trafficked roads, and stunning scenery. Yes, the spring crop of black flies was out in force, but if I didn’t stop for too long it wasn’t a big deal. This figure-eight loop heads out of North Creek to the north, then goes through Olmstedville and onto Trout Brook Road, some of the best riding you’re likely to find anywhere, through woods, past cabins, and generally along the creek that gives the road its name. From there I headed up Hoffmans Road and then onto Potash Hill Road, where I was reminded why I generally don’t go there because the climb is 14%! Ouch! Then out to the end of the road at Loch Muller and back the rest of the way around past Oliver Pond and down the huge hill to Irishtown, where St. Mary’s Church and the local baseball field are the only remaining reminders of the community that used to be at this spot. Then back to Sullivan’s Store in Olmstedville for a Gatorade stop, then back the last few miles to North Creek to pause for a moment before heading home, remembering all the good times I’ve had riding both road and gravel in this beautiful area. . . . on the Delaware & Hudson Rail Trail from Granville NY south to Rupert, VT, and it was a beautiful day to start as 14 of us set off from the railroad station in Granville. I was joined by Paceliners DJG21 and Broccolicog–and perhaps others who were in Stealth mode? The old railroad grade slopes up ever so slightly (1-2%) as we went south upstream along the shore of the Indian River, then downstream along White Creek to West Rupert, where we turned around at the New York border. Vermont has invested some funds into their portion of the trail and it’s quite nicely graveled, but the NY portions at Granville and south of Rupert are not so nice. Then we stopped at Sherman’s Store for drinks, food, bathroom, and just general rest stopping before we headed back north on the slight downgrade back to Granville, where some of us then adjourned to the Common Roots Brewery in South Glans Falls for some well-deserved post-ride recovery food and drink. Thanks for great pictures of great rides. Although my wife and I have been in Virginia for over 30 years and north-central PA before that, I grew up in a little town at the northern tip of the Adirondack Park: Keeseville, NY - right on Lake Champlain. My wife grew up across the lake in, and near, Burlington, VT. We got married in Burlington in 1980. Wow, almost 44 years ago!

When I was a kid of maybe 9 or 10 years old, my dad was a union carpenter and had a construction job near North Creek. He went down for a week at a time and came home on weekends. I went with him for a week during the summer, and I can vaguely remember the creek, and crawdads. Since I am now 71, that would have been a little over 60 years ago - wow!

I will be posting here again in about a month. 4 weeks ago, I fell in the middle of the night, while going to the bathroom still mostly asleep from an OTC sleep supplement, and broke 6 ribs - 2 of the 6 were broken in 2 places for 8 fractures. In the back, left, rib # 4,5,6,7,8,9 were all broken in a line, then 5, and 6 were broken again around front. Pure torture for the 1st week, but getting better now. Needless to say, I don't take that supplement any more.

Today I took out the newly built up Sancineto for a 30 mile shakedown ride while taking pictures throughout the valley. Great morning on a wonderful feeling bike.

I hope the riding is good in the Cache Valley. Our daughter left Logan for Houston, so no more visits for me. As I think you know, she was doing a 2-year post-doc research position at Utah State in Logan but is now on faculty at UH. I loved Logan when I visited.

Thanks for the great pics of perfectly set up bikes, all too small for me, but oh well! I have never heard of Sancineto, but you have it built up perfectly.

Spent some time in the Travers City area before cancer. Also was at my nephews wedding on Mackinaw Island. Great area. Love it.

Thursday ride before rain. The famous NJ corn is beginning to emerge on Homestead Rd north of Oldwick. Photo is about 100 yards from the epicenter of the 4.7 earthquake we had recently.

. . . 41-mileMohawk Hudson Cycling Club ride in upstate Washington County, NY from Greenwich east and around through Shushan, Salem, and back to Greenwich. Some truly steep climbs added to the fun(?) on O’Donnell Hill Road, Perry Hill Road, and the truly huge climb on Joe Beane Road, one of the signature climbs in the original Tour of the Battenkill Route. Fortunately, the original forecast for rain didn’t bear out and it turned out to be a beautiful day to ride through the fresh spring greenery of Washington County. Thanks to everybody who helped to make this a fun day and to ride leader Bill for planning our route that included all this plus three segments of dirt roads that were in great shape. A great day! The old barns and silos are a real icon of northeast riding. It's fascinating to me that so many of them seem to be in the same state of wear. Those look like some great roads for sure!
