That picture was taken around 4-5 miles from where my pictures from today were taken! Yes, every time I go out to the Clarke County area, I am aware that I might be an extra 5-10 minutes if I get stuck at a train crossing.

When I was in Portland for a few weeks, I remember almost every ride I'd get stopped at least once for quite some time, and it was very tempting to just climb over the couplers, but I never did. Sometimes there'd be train backups for an hour and there was no choice but to wait or go allllll the way around.

This photo is from my second ride today, which was 1.9 miles long --from my house to Yamafuji to meet a friend for lunch. Getting a bike and committing to, within reason, using it for all my within-2-miles-of-home errands has been a joy. The process of transportation has been elevated from 'process' to 'fun activity.' I live in a small town, 2 miles goes a long way --bank, library, groceries, restaurants, parks, basketball courts, dance classes, pottery painting, arcade...

My other ride was 50some miles into Fort Valley. It rained at the start, but then the sky turned blue and the sun came out in such a way that had the really nifty effect of reflecting the blue onto the pavement so that it was like a layer of blue underneath a layer of sheer black --like a really fancy coffee table, or a bike paint job that I'd trade two month's worth of ice cream for. Then the wind picked up into the 20mphs, which felt like being a witch on a broomstick sometimes. Which reminds me --Kiki's Delivery Service is a fantastic movie that isn't about bicycling but involves lots of bikes and bike technology.

Dropped the pressure in the 25mm Agilests to 68/71 psi on the wider rims I got from Clean, and the bike gets even smoother! This retrogrouch is loving modern(-ish? it's a 2016) carbon.

Flat and quick shakedown ride in the valley. I am going to try and get a proper road ride in tomorrow.

After 10 sunless days (snow, rain, fog, dense clouds...a bit of everything!) it was a beautiful sunny day, so good to get out and off the rollers.

Woke up to sun and hoarfrost.
Thirty two degrees, sunny and no wind.
Great day in northern Michigan.

Given his location, maybe a hawk would’ve been better
