40s F in the morning but warmed up a bit, Fall is definitely here. An occasional ray of sun but a nice day for a ride.

Took my "errand" bike out for it's first ever long ride, a 21 miler. Surprisingly comfortable and the 8 speed IGH had the gearing needed to climb the few short but very steep bits along the way. Great way to carry a full size DSLR with a couple of lenses.

Dirtphalt 2023 - Day 1

On this first day-Friday-we did a bit under 20 miles through the hills west of Cooperstown, followed by a potluck picnic at CNYRider's cabin by the lake. The weather was cool and breezy, but just about perfect to dry off the sweat we generated climbing all the hills. We ended up with 19.3 miles at just over 100 feet per mile, and I ended up with some great photos and some tasty BBQ ribs! A great day! (Photos with Panasonic Lumix ZS200D and iPhone 13 Pro.)

Butternut Valley Gravel Grinder

After destroying my legs on Friday at Dirtphalt, I joined my friends on Saturday in the midst of all-day torrential rain to ride at least part of the Butternut Valley Gravel Grinder event near Garrattsville, NY, starting at the Butternuts Beer & Ale brewery. We were joined by gravel cycling legend Ted King, who I saw for a moment at the start before he got on his bike and smoked me and everybody else like cheap cigars. The full “A” ride was two laps of the 33-mile course, the B ride was one lap, and the C ride was only 16.5 miles. I started after everybody else, so had the entire road to myself for 99% of the ride and so it was incredibly scenic and contemplative. Plenty of time to think as I slowly pedaled my old man legs up the 13% climbs. Thinking things like “What the HELL was I thinking?!?”, “Can I get an Uber way out here in the middle of nowhere?” and similar deep thoughts. I signed up for the B ride but then only did the 16.5-mile C ride after reaching my FTS threshold. (“FTS” = ”Eff THIS s**t!) But because I chose a sane ride length, I wasn’t the last one to finish and so was able to watch others stumble into the finish covered with mud. There was good hot food waiting and hearty draughts of the wonderful Butternuts Ale! Even with all the rain and mud and the third straight day of 100 feet per mile and trying to keep my camera dry, it was . . . A great day! (Photos with Panasonic Lumix ZS200D and iPhone 13 Pro.)

A perfect day on Martha, mid-60Fs, mostly clear, not too windy. Passed 4,000 miles on the Bingham, which has now been here 1-1/2 years. Enjoyed my typical giant pecan sandie cookie at Morning Glory Farm - I have to ride at least 50 miies to have one, so the calories balance out between intake and expenditure!

My friend Jose came down from NJ for a taste of Skyline Drive and Shenandoah National Park today. The first photo is a bad idea that came out good!

A friend organized a weekend of riding in and around Sequoia/King's Canyon this past weekend. California is a magical place.

Years and years ago I was shooting my old Mamiya 645 at Dark Hollow Falls. Slipped on the wet rocks and fell into a crack the water was flowing through. One arm pinned under me and the other couldn't do anything to leverage me out. I was jammed good and having a hard time breathing with water pouring over me. Seemed like forever until a young couple showed up to get me unjammed and out of there.

But at least I managed to not break the camera, LOL!

I know the very spot of which you speak, and I too have done some inadvisable things there in order to get The Good Shot. I'm glad you are still alive and averaging 19mph on a flock of really neat bikes.

The snow stakes are up along 242 (McKenzie Pass), but I’m going to ride it as much as I can before the snow flies.
