See, that's why I miss SoCal. It has so much bigger adventures than most people give it credit for.

Usually too big. It feels like all trais or dirt roads are either going up a steep mountain or down a steep mountain. I'd love a nearby 30-40 mile gravel loop that was just lightly rolling roads!

I agree with both of you — lots of wild open space very close to Los Angeles to disappear into, but you have to love (or at least be willing to suffer through) lots of climbing. The only people we saw all day once we hit the dirt were three dudes in full camo on e-bikes who were out bow hunting.

I bought this bike 10 years ago (for my 50th birthday), and it still rides like a dream. (Thank you Adam Kaplan at Get a Grip Cycles in Chicago.) I decided to give it some new wheels and am happy I did. It was a chilly morning here in Central Oregon.

Went around Dillon Lake and then up to Hosier pass Colorado. The Google directions avoided busy rt. 9 and took me up back dirt roads some of which were almost MTB trails but were still state routes. I had to keep double checking my phone map. The one image of the straight shot dirt road of the hills doesn't show the steepness. It was insane at the very end, my rear tire spun out on the gravel and I had no choice but to walk the last 20 ft of rutted dirt road.
The ride down rt9 was glorious though. |

Took the old Raleigh Team Usa up to the north end of the valley to enjoy the fall colors this morning. A cold and hilly ride.
The pictures don't show how steep it get's up in here. Garmin recorded a max grade over 17% and my legs and heart would agree. As you can see, snow is already making it's way into the mountains. Getting ready to descend a bit, road is peeking through the trees down below. More color: |

Olympic Discoverty Trail
Here's some photos from my recent trip to the Olympic Peninsula in Washington. We rode the Olympic Discovery Adventure Trail to Crescent Lake and visited the hot springs, swam, had an incredible time.
Highly recommend this trail to everyone, it's super flowy and the grades and very relaxed. Incredible riding. |
