Did a big loop this last weekend that started in Duarte and went up Mt Baldy (real name Mt San Santonio), which is the highest peak in the San Gabriel range (and at 10,064 feet the highest point in Los Angeles County). The ride up was mostly on dirt, really rocky and rough for long sections. One spot was washed out by a huge slide that we had to hike over. Only other people out there were the 4x4 crowd, who clearly thought we were insane. Total distance was 100 miles with just under 10,000 feet of climbing.

The route we were following stopped at the notch, which I believe is about 7,800 feet. I’ve hiked to the actual summit before, but it was years ago (my main memory is that I bonked badly). I’m not sure how high you can ride on the trails, but I assume higher than we went.

It's funny. I love the "idea" of camping, but unless conditions are literally ideal, I always kind of regret camping. I need a hot shower, a cold beer and a soft bed after a good day's ride.

This past weekend I went up to the Adirondacks in upstate New York and the North Creek area to get in some riding, hiking, and exploring. One of the rides I wanted to do was west from North Creek, then up into the dirt roads on the hills surrounding 13th Lake and the hamlet of North River. It was a tough ride. 28.miles total and 2753 rt. Vertical, but a bit over nine miles of that is dead flat on Rt. 28, so take that out and you’re left with 145 feet of climb per mile, one of the toughest rides I’ve ever done including a 4.25 mile climb up to the Barton Garnett mine where the rock shop and ticket counter were open, allowing me to refill my water bottles and grab a soft drink on this day when it got over 85 degrees. Then it was back own and then climb Rogers Road to enjoy the superlative views from the top of that climb, then down a bit again and back up to Garnet Hill Lodge to enjoy those views, then down to the campground at 13th Lake to enjoy the late afternoon light before the screaming downhill back to Rt. 28 and then back into North Creek. It’s as stunningly beautiful area and I love going up that way whenever I can. Exhausting, but . . . a great day! (Photos with Panasonic Lumix ZS200 and iPhone 13 Pro.)

My last ride of the weekend was with friend Dan to explore some of the unpaved roads around the small community of Speculator in the southern Adirondacks. Dan has already ridden some of these roads but agreed to go with me to show me a few special places he has discovered. It turned into a day long, great ride of 31.3 miles and blessedly not as much climbing as my North River ride on Sunday, because my legs were pretty well fried! At many points of the ride, we just decided to “see where that goes” and took some side trips on narrow double tracks to see what we could discover. Sometimes it was nothing, others it was a cabin or unoccupied clearing with a fire ring. But we also visited the Kunjamuk Cave, which Dan though was a secret, but now there is a sign along the road, so we guessed it’s no longer a secret! Plus, we rode a bit of old highway 30 to visit the incredible Austin Falls on the Sacandaga River. We also rode into the Perkins Conservation Easement, where we rode by a very busy–and very loud–logging operation to make wood pulp with the biggest woodchipper I’ve ever seen. Finally at the end of the day we stopped by Great Sacandaga Brewing in Broadalbin for some celebratory pizza and brews. A great day to end a great weekend! . . . fellow Paceliner DJG21 and I rode out of Essex, NY to give him an opportunity to show me some of the roads he rides near his family’s summer place by Lake Champlain. As he has told me, it’s an incredible area for riding, with good roads, little traffic, and huge variations of scenery as you ride from the Lake Champlain shore west onto the meadowed plateau that gives way to the forests and peaks of the Adirondacks, all within 15 miles of the lake. This 40-mile route even included about 3 miles of well-maintained gravel that posed no challenge for our road bikes, but added to the scenery bounty as we rode beside the Boquet river east of Elizabethtown after stopping at Stewart’s in E-Town for some mid-ride snacking. Doug had to take off post-ride, but as I headed south, I stopped for dinner at the incredible Paradox Brewery in North Hudson and had the obligatory celebration beer. A great day!
