Riding and rowing

The rowing club in my city had an open house today. I’ve always been rowing curious, so I cycled the 10 miles to check it out. What a blast! The club offers learn to row classes in 4 and 8 as well as singles. I was unsure about rowing with a fused ankle / brace, but we made it work.

Beautiful morning on the river.
No pics, sorry (yes, I realize this is the ride photos thread…)

P.s. I know we have members who row or have rowed in the past.
Does anyone have experience with adaptive rowing and specifically using the Shimano pivoting stretcher system?

Plans I had for today fell through, so I decided to drive up to the Catskills and do the 50 mile route for the Catskills Cycling Challenge.

There are two notable climbs, which are healthy but very manageable with grades that stayed low.

Ultimately, there was some great scenery to be taken in, but far too much of this ride took place on double-yellow highway roads where the speeds are much higher than I am comfortable with sharing the road on. Most of these roads had either a very narrow shoulder, no shoulder or a soft shoulder that could not be ridden on a road bike.

Traffic was low today, and I didnt have any problems, but these are the kind of roads where IMO, people on bikes can get hurt. 55mph speed limits mean real speed is in the 60s sometimes and driver's just dont expect to see cyclists on the roads, especially when the road is twisty without long sight lines.

There are SO many better back roads up in that neck of the woods, and this route failed to use almost any of them, favoring more travelled major roads.

Ultimately even though I enjoyed the ride, I dont recommend this one, specifically because there are so many better roads to be ridden up there.

Few photos:

Another 45 mike out and back ride on the Banks-Vernonia Trail. Turned out that it was the Vernonia Jamboree today. We did not stick around for the parade.

30 miles with my wife on a hot and windy day in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia. We just got home a few minutes before the storm was over us - good thing we pushed the last few miles.

2nd weekend in a row riding past Belle Grove Plantation

Lake arrowhead MTB fun

Me and my crew at Sky Park trails in Santa’s Village few days ago (Lake arrowhead, CA).

1st time on serious trails for the little ones. They normally only ride paved trails and neighborhood streets in Plano.

They did amazing! We started out looping the easiest trails, but kept expanding further looking for more challenge. Somehow we took a wrong turn and ended up needing to traverse the “black” trails to get back to the village.

San Bernardino mountains were amazing…highs in the low 80s after baking in Texas hotbox all summer!

The e-bike my wife rented wasn’t enough boost for her to not be overwhelmed once we got on the blacks. I ended up pushing that heavy monster up and down several hairy, technical sections to help her make it through. Everyone had at least one major off and a few scrapes and war stories to go with it, but the boys are all stoked about MTB life after the experience.
