Thanks!

I was lucky to get an early Igleheart-made one, and it has served me well over the years.

Talking

* real name: Bob

* where do you live? Charlottesville, VA

* explanation of your handle: initials

* explanation of your avatar: have not figured out yet how to load one

* age (general or specific): 58 (old enough to miss my 30's)

* occupation: entrepreneur. I have started four new companies. Two are still going strong.

* favorite bike: My Lemond Zurich (much improved from the picture below, with the help of several paceliners)

* what's in your stable? In addition to the '97 Lemond Zurich, I have a 1991 Trek mtb which has been through various incarnations as a trail bike, a polo bike, a city bike, and now back to a trail bike. I am also responsible for another vintage Trek steel mtb which will soon have drop bars, and a '90s Fuji step-through.

* fastest speed on a road bike? where? when? 55ish, coming down Afton mountain in the late 90's. I probably wouldn't do that now.

* how many miles ON THE ROAD on a road bike last year? just enough to make sure everything still is still working smoothly and that the brifters don't freeze up.

* picture of yourself or your ride? see attached

* make up and answer at least one additional question: What's your favorite bonk fix? I used to bonk big time in cold weather and have to carry a giant fig newton that the little country stores around here sell, to get me home.

* what is the biggest lie you've ever told: Well it wasn't my lie, but my best friend in high school used to tell his female friends that I was outlandishly proportioned.

* and, something fun: My favorite thing on a bike was taking a celebratory ride, six+ hours down roads I had never been on, pre-cell phone. I want to find that experience again.

* How did you find the paceline Forum?* A friend pointed me to it.

Len

WELCOME! I’ve read about your city in Bill McKibben’s book “Hope, Human and Wild”... sounds like a nice place to bike. Are you riding in city or do you have places to ride outside city limits?

Time for an Update

I've been off of the forum for about 7 years and just logged back on to see if/how it has changed.

I suppose I should update THIS post from 11 years ago

* explanation of your handle: self-descriptive. In grammar school I always got the uniform with the #1 or 2 on it because that was always the XS size
* explanation of your avatar. Calvin of "Calvin & Hobbs." About as close as a fictional character can get to me. Mom learned to dread the words "Hey, Mom, look at me!"
* age (general or specific): 48
* occupation: Cardiology/Electrophysiology (think: "electricians of the heart" or "Cardiologists who like Star Trek")
* favorite bike: Serotta Ottrott ST

* fastest speed on a road bike? where? when? 53 mph on a downhill in Marin before I thought: "if I crash, it's ICU if I'm lucky"
* how many miles ON THE ROAD on a road bike last year? Very few due to work and kids but hoping for a come-back
* picture of yourself or your ride? THIS is my quick hill ride (lucky me)
* make up and answer at least one additional question: What does it feel like when you ride? - I feel like a dog that has finally been let off the leash at a beach: eyes bright, ears up, tongue lolling, and galloping fast for the pure joy of it!
* what is the biggest lie you've ever told: "this won't hurt much"
* and, something fun. Sunny day, 80 miles in the hills of Marin, riding in a group of friends, working together in the flats, suffering together on the hills.

New To Group

* real name: Rick
* where do you live: Phoenix, AZ
* explanation of your handle: Based on name
* explanation of your avatar: Not sure if I even have one
* age (general or specific): 39
* occupation: Aerospace and Defense Manager
* favorite bike: Right now I am really liking the Fondriest X-Status but I am relatively new to the whole biking community so I don't know that much about bikes.
* what's in your stable? 2011 Fuji 3.0 Cross, 1972 Peugeot UO8, 1985 Raleigh Competition USA
* fastest speed on a road bike? where? when? I have very limited miles under my belt right now so based on my heart rate monitor app a mere 26mph. I have only ridden around my community so far at 10 miles and under.
* how many miles ON THE ROAD on a road bike last year? I just started riding about a month ago and I have around 60 miles so far but I am really enjoying the whole hobby and experience so far. It all started with COVID. I have my Dad's 1972 Peugeot UO8 that had been sitting in my garage or storage for 40 years and I always said I would restore it. COVID happened and I got a week of furlough so I decided to finally restore my Dad's old bike. Man, I learned a lot about French bikes and the weird standard no longer in production and spent quite a bit of time on Ebay. You can't make a economic case to restore a UO8 but the sentimental value made it a great investment for me. The frame was way to small for me to ride at 54cm and I am 6" so it just proudly hangs in my garage. I had so much fun restoring that bike that I said I am going to get myself an old steel bike that is close to my size and restore that to start riding. I saw the 1985 Raleigh Competition USA on CL for $150 and ended up buying it for $130. It didn't have pedals, seat post, brake calipers were incomplete, and the cables needed to be installed. Once I sorted all of that out I started riding it and it has been a joy so far. I have always been into fitness and working with my hands so this really in the complete package for me. Geak out on old bikes, fix them, and ride them.
* picture of yourself or your ride? Not sure if the pics will load but they are below.

* make up and answer at least one additional question: 58cm Fondriest X-Status or Status Carb
* what is the biggest lie you've ever told: Can't think of a real whopper off the top of my head.
* and, something fun. I like all things fitness and competition. I ride with my boys on leisure rides quite a bit. I also like to wood work but with the kids I don't have the time available to pursue too many hobbies.
