Maybe I should soak mine in water then freeze it a few times and get this over with rather than riding it hoping that I don't push on a land mine one day.
I wouldn't do that but it's a bummer to have to ride it not knowing what will happen. Last edited by TonyG; 09-21-2023 at 05:25 PM. |

I heard Silca is developing a crank-bath solution which lowers the durability of Hollowtech cranks by 37% for just $100. Guaranteed to fail within 1 year. Might seem expensive but considering options for acquiring the special new cranks it's a bargain.

Seems at odds with the "must be on the bike" mentioned by one poster's LBS above.

The initial inspection to qualify the crank is on the bike. If the bike has a date code involved in the recall, then it is more carefully inspected involving washing.

People that have broken cranks in their collection should have gotten them replaced before this, they were very good about replacing them. Some shops might have been bad about it, but everything I've heard says shimano always replaced broken cranks. I would definitely take an obviously broken crank to a shop now.

Do you still have the crank? They should replace it now.

The warranty thing has been in session for several years, few questions asked
I've had several failures darken my door, shimano has never asked me for a receipt or proof of purchase. Most replacements have appeared 2nd day air with a new front derailleur to boot. We're talking 8 to 10 year old cranks, and many I did not sell. You will get a charge for some labor. No overseas penalty applied Sounds like you got a deserved runaround by the retailer knowing the score, but shimano doesn't ask questions in these situations |

This is going to prompt me to go do a thorough inspection of the crank on my SwissX which has seen a ton of wet muddy conditions.

There's about 8 places where they crack or separate. The front and the back side are two pieces. I've seen the whole arm split off, the spiders separate and the joint of the arm to the spider.

I love how Instagram is afire with broken shimano cranks right now; lol.
When a company the size of Shimano institutes a safety product recall what are the requirements to get the word out about it?

Well, every dealer is aware (though not all are trained/certified inspectors).
I am pretty sure every cycling media outlet has run some type of announcement or article. They might have to notify everyone who submitted warranty documentation at time of purchase BK
