Went looking for the snow line on a couple of our local mountains today. We got up to about 7,000' before the road started to look like this:
Usually get our first summit on this road in late March. Looks like it will be a while yet before this one opens this year. The views on the way up are still great, though! |

Photos from your rides.
Rode the full century Reach The Beach route from Portland to Astoria yesterday. It’s been 11 years since I last rode a century. I hadn’t put in nearly enough training miles to be ready for it so I rode on willpower and stupidity. There were two significant climbs, the second of which sapped my willpower so I finished the ride on stupidity. Cramps were much less of a problem than in years past. I attribute that to eating a little before I was hungry and dropping a Nuun electrolyte tablet in every water bottle. I also didn’t linger at the rest areas. My body has changed enough so that a C17 saddle is no longer comfortable for these rides. Time to try something else. It was a beautiful day, and the Meivici was definitely the right choice to ride.
I have bad ideas… Last edited by B4_Ford; 05-21-2023 at 12:11 PM. |

Had a bigger plan for the day until I realised that the saddle is slipping. None the less...so worth it.

Painted churches, Schulenburg
Did a nice and easy 32-mile tandem ride with the my wife yesterday along a route that visited a few of the painted churches in Schulenburg, Texas. The inside is quite spectacular and none of our phone pictures would do it justice so I am going to borrow one on the web.
I downloaded the route from ridewithgps and shortened it by heading back towards the start point around mile 28 instead of continuing on north to do the extra loop. https://ridewithgps.com/routes/13174209 The weather was nice and cool in the 70s after a shower that passed by that area a few hours ago. We rode with a group for a little bit before we settled back down to ride at our own pace and took our time to visit the churches. We saw a turtle in the middle of the road and went back to make sure it's out of harm's way. All in all, it was a very nice ride with very few cars and on scenic quiet country roads, highly recommend if you ever get to that area. Another Chappaquiddick ride
The Medicare Marauder MTB group was back on Chappy today. Three months ago I posted about a house that was threatened by erosion and had been sandbagged. The photos below show that where it was then is water now! In the second photo you may be able to make out the old electrical meter pedestal in the trees.

Here's a screenshot of the Ride With GPS in Hybrid Mode, showing the house, and our track on it. Pretty much everything south of our track is water now.

Another ride looking for snowline, this time up the next canyon over. The morning was electric--spectacular. We had intense thunderstorms all night, which resulted in perfectly crisp mountain air all the way up the canyon.
The flood water is starting to flow in earnest. So many unexpected waterfalls along the canyon wall, and the river is running high, to say the least. Just one of those mornings you wish could last forever. But the snowline tells us that we're still a few weeks away from being able to summit. So grateful for spaces that lift us above the concerns of everyday life! |
