Today . . .
After our club kickoff yesterday and some serious climbing, myself and friends Brian and Jacob went down to the Schoharie Valley in search of some scenery without quite so much climbing. We started in Middleburgh next to Schoharie Creek, then headed south on Route 30 for six miles before angling up onto the west shoulder of the valley for a way. Then onto the highway again before stopping on the return leg to enjoy the Old Blenheim Covered Bridge, or should I say the “New Old Bridge?” It was originally built in 1855 as a 232-foot-long toll bridge–the longest single span covered bridge in the world. It last until 2011 when Hurricane Irene sent it flying down Schoharie creek in pieces. This current bridge is an exact duplicate finished in 2018 and dedicated a historic landmark. The only difference is this modern replica is built 12 feet higher to hopefully protect it in the future. From there we rode to the village of Breakabeen, where we headed up onto the hills on the east side of the valley before coming back into Middleburgh where we slaked our hunger and thirst with craft brews from the Green Wolf Brewery and some tasty post-ride pizza from Hubie’s. A great day! (Photo with Panasonic Lumix ZS200 and iPhone 13 Pro.)

In Lancaster County Pa spring time is when farmers will spray their field with a water/manure slurry ahead of the growing season. If you happen to be going by when the spray is fresh it can be very potent. I was down wind when this picture was taken. The "aroma" can make your eyes water briefly. The darker side on the left is fresh slurry and the lighter side is yet to be treated.

Gosh, that brings back memories! Back in the 60’s I lived south of Pittsburgh, about a mile from a state-owned dairy farm and mental hospital (as they were called at the time). The smell wafting over from the farm in late Spring was enough to make you cough.
