Toad Strangler Gravel Grinder, CHatham, NY, 4-15-2023
Had a great time photographing the “Toad Strangler” gravel grinder event on the beautiful roads of northern Columbia County and the town of Chatham. This event is held every year to kick off the spring riding season and raise money for the development programs for the Capital Bicycle Racing Club. It was a beautiful day that proved the “cloudy” forecast wrong and after my moto and driver didn’t happen, I shot the event from my car, so an apology to everyone I got all dusty as I passed them on the course! Many trees were just beginning to bud and flowers just coming out, but there were plenty of daffodils already blooming. The 40.5 mile course is one of the most scenic you’re going to find for a gravel ride, plus there was a 10mile family ride and two different kids races that took place at 1:30 after most of the other riders had finished, so a great audience for the champion riders of tomorrow. There was also primo shwag in the form of special Toad Strangler t-shirts, a food truck, special huuuuge cookies from sponsor Bountiful Bread in Albany, and free first drafts from sponsor Chatham Brewery. It looked like everybody had a great time. I know I did, and feel like I got some pretty good images. Thanks to all for being such good subjects for my lenses! (All photos shot with Nikon DSLR’s and lenses including 15-20mm zoom, 28-300mm zoom, and 150-600mm zoom.)

"Michaux Madness" central Pennsylvania Gravel last week
Last week I journeyed down to south central Pennsylvania to join some friends for an annual spring gravel riding/training trip organized by my friend Chet. We rode for three days in various parts of the Michaux State Forest between Gettysburg and Chambersburg. I was on my Lynskey Pro GR. This is a beautiful area of managed forest that hosts several state parks and historic sites, plus many, many miles of well-maintained gravel roads climbing up and down the hills and running along the ridges. It was a challenging but fun three days of gaining spring fitness and exploring this area I had never visited before. Several friends and I had a beautiful VRBO house near Ortanna, PA, that was within an easy drive of our ride starts. I strongly recommend you visit this area if you want some great gravel cycling! Just remember to bring the water and food on your rides, because there are no places out in the woods to re-stock! Our routes included:
Day 1-Caledonia State Park: 24.3 miles/2299 feet/94 ft per mile, https://ridewithgps.com/routes/42523021 Day 2-Camp Penn: 24.3 miles/2684 feet/110 ft per mile, https://ridewithgps.com/routes/42523029 Day 3-Pine Grove State Park: 24.8 miles/2494 ft per mile/100 feet per mile, https://ridewithgps.com/routes/42523037 (All photos shot with Panasonic Lumix ZS200 or iPhone 13 pro)

It was, and thanks . . .
I rode the course with some friends and it's challenging but scenic.
Same applies for the Farmer's Daughter event coming up May 21. Organizer Andy R. says he expect to sell out the 1200 rider cap and I'm photographing that as well, likely from moto with driver. I've started the 64 mile course 4 times but never finished. Most I got was 43 miles. It's tough as hell with singletrack included, some of it in places where bikes are only allowed for this event. HERE are photos from last year's FDGG. BBD http://www.farmersdaughtergravelgrinder.com/ https://www.bikereg.com/56021

One of the most commonly done road rides in metro Atlanta is called Silk Sheets. The gravel version pictured here is known as Dirty Sheets.
Just as I finished taking the first picture a wannabe rally driver came through the sweeping turn nearly sideways. I thought the car was going to break loose and take me out. I ride gravel more for safety reasons and it would have been ironic to be hit by one of the perhaps three cars I saw on the entire ride! |
