annual Halloween ride at Albany Rural Cemetery

Today my friend John took us on his second annual Albany Rural Cemetery Halloween ride in this huge cemetery in the heart of the New York state capital. Over 130,000 former Albany residents are buried here–more than there are living persons in then city!

Incorporated in 1841, Albany Rural Cemetery (ARC) is one of the oldest and grandest examples of the rural or garden cemetery movement in America. While still an active cemetery after 175 years, Albany Rural Cemetery continues to be much more than a place of burial. It offers visitors historical, architectural, and sculptural memorials, as well as amazing natural beauty. Albany Rural Cemetery is located in Menands, New York—within 5 miles of New York State’s Capitol building in downtown Albany. It is a natural oasis in the middle of the Capital Region of New York.

Today ARC attracts thousands of visitors who come to pay tribute to historical figures and loved ones who are deceased, and to enjoy the beautiful landscape, streams, waterfalls, and array of funerary art and architecture that is ARC. Albany Rural is also a special haven for bird-watchers, walkers, runners, cyclists, and dog-walkers. Come visit–and stay for a while! . . . BWAHAHAHAHAAA!!!

The bike rack at the coffee shop. The signature on the Specialized is Peter Sagan’s.

It's been a nice fall for riding. The first week of November should be good too!

Crazy weather in NJ lately. Close to 70 today and predicted to be into the 70's this weekend. I'll take it as long as the cold wants to stay away. Gorgeous evening for a ride!

Last weekend's gravel grinder in Columbia County, NY . . .

Last Saturday our local Mohawk Hudson Cycling Club held its first Gravel Goblin ride to benefit the Northeastern New York Regional Food Bank, with three different gravel routes (26, 28, and 44 miles) out of Sabba Winery east of Nassau in northern Columbia County, southeast of Albany. We had over 200 riders there paying for 100% of their registration to go to the food bank, plus donating canned food items for the food bank. Costumes and bike decorations were encouraged. It was an absolutely beautiful day with bluebird skies and temperatures going from the low 40’s at ride starts all the way up into the mid 60’s in time for us to enjoy the sunshine plus wine, beer, and several excellent food trucks after the rides. The event raised almost $9400 for the food bank! Every pre-registered rider also got a “sweet treat” pumpkin cookie from our local sponsor Bountiful Bread. I rode the 28-mile route that had so many incredible views and almost 100 feet per mile climbing. Even though the majority of our fall foliage has fallen, there was still enough to make some incredibly beautiful spots to ride through. Coincidentally, this ride put me over 3,000 miles for the season. Not nearly my best ever, but two detached retinas and a pretty gnarly crash in June put a hole in my riding schedule this summer. (Photos shot with my Panasonic Lumix ZS200 and iPhone 13 Pro.)
