My current definition of “perfection” is a Fierte IT. I bought this a few months ago for the frame. I’d heard these referred to as “the poor man’s Ottrott” so I couldn’t pass when I had the chance to pick it up relatively cheaply. I had an R7000 groupset on my parts shelf so I threw it on. I’ve been fighting a losing battle with arthritis in my hip so I wanted to build something that would make climbing easier. With that in mind, I combined an RX800 rear derailleur with a Wolf Tooth DM to allow clearance for an XT 11-40 cassette. I had some Chinese carbon wheels, stem, and bars from a parts bike that I threw on. In keeping with the budget theme, I picked up a pair of Ultra Sports to test fit clearance for 28’s. Once they wear out I’ll replace them with something better. Saddle is one of a couple Brooks Swallow ti’s that I have and love. For me, this is perfection as it gets me confidently back on routes that I’ve recently avoided. Even though it was an “entry level” Serotta, it’s still arguably better than most off the shelf frames from that era. It’s perfectly comfortable for long road rides, and very confident on the gravel trails around Forest Park. I’m sure that some of the kids passing me on their carbon frame electric shift hydraulic disc brake rolling mortgage payments see my bike as a relic, but I love it because I’m completely connected to it. I guess that’s perfection.

Colnago Extreme Power with Campagnolo Record 10 and Nucleon tubulars. Pretty nice for a skinny tire bike.

One of the last Gunnar frames made. Much better handling bike than I am a bike handler.

My most 23mm friendly bike. It fits much bigger but rides on 23s like a dream somehow.

I've been low-key stalking a C64 58S for like two years now and had to give this one a whirl from TPC even though I have neither the time nor the space to be mucking about with surplus bikes-- after a couple rides on it I'm still kind of stuck in limbo.. I love the way it looks, it's lightness and stiffness is wonderful for climbing -- but overall if I had to choose between my Kirk and this, 9 outta 10 times I'd take the Kirk - or maybe 7 outta 10. Such is the problem of finding perfection. It sets a mark that few other things can measure to.. and then what?
