Went on a camp/gravel adventure this past weekend in the Sierra Nat'l Forest. My riding pal is an awesome cook. We camped out Friday night and then dug ourselves into a deep one the next day. I've never built my own route before and must've clicked something wrong or maybe there was a glitch in the mapping program. Route was supposed to be about 75 miles and 7,000 feet. It ended up being 90 miles and over 9,000 feet. We started at 9 and didn't finish until after 9. Luckily we brought lights. The final 6 miles was a gravel descent in the dark. I was shivering in the cold. As soon as we got back, we hopped in the car and turned the heater on full blast to warm up. Absolutely stunning ride and views all over.

This past Sunday was a great day for a gravel ride on the backroads around Wallingford VT with angryscientist, CNYrider, PAmtbrider and his MAmtb rider! We have been riding together once or twice a year for many years. CNYrider first had a gathering at his place near Cooperstown, NY in 2008 and we were riding gravel long, long before it became “cool!” For this weekend in Vermont he found us a great cabin and this Sunday ride was the final day of three rides. Unfortunately, I had some prior commitments so I could only join this on this single ride, but it was a great one! We did a big loop out of Wallingford, taking in some incredible views in the morning sun and a mile of backwoods hike-a-bike before ending our ride before the rain moved in later in the day. Vermont has gravel roads literally everywhere, most of them surfaced with the beautiful white gravel reminiscent of the Strada Bianche in Italy. We ended up doing only 22 miles, but covered enough beautiful scenery for a ride twice as long. Before coming home in the afternoon, I drove around a for a few hours and scouted out another route that I want to come back to do during foliage season. A great day! Dave, from a guy that grew up about 35 miles east of Whiteface mountain (which you know well, judging from your posts), thanks for the pics. As I told Nick a few posts back, my wife and I were married in Burlington, VT in 1980 (which is just across the lake from the Adirondacks) , so I know a fair amount of upstate NY, and a fair amount of the state of VT, as well. VT which is beautiful, especially south of Burlington. Again, thanks for the great pics!

The thing about this area too is that we passed a ton of roads that looked super inviting. The potential for great roads makes it seem like we have barely scratched the surface. Most of them are pretty hilly and demanding, so it makes big mile days difficult, especially for a weekend of riding, but it keeps the adventure in returning to explore new roads.

We will definitely be back. If you think you might be able to swing a weekend back in your old stomping grounds, we can keep you in the loop, would be fun if you could make it!

Did a tour of the Gaps in 2015, fun!

Excellent! Not a lot else you can own and use for so long without suffering diminishing returns as a good bicycle.

Thanks. Pretty common site in this part of the state but never get tired of seeing them at full might.

39 miles with my wife on a chilly day (mid to high 50s) in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia. First day since early last spring for long sleeves.
