Saw Bruce Hornsby the other night here in Charlotte, NC . What a surprise? I always liked his playing but for some reason I did not groove on it. "I did not come here to f around...."

Friend invited me to see him this weekend. The show was wild. Lots of improvisation . I also liked the opening act Nikky Bluhm. She was lovely and had a great band and she did a great version of Dusty Springfield's son of a preacher man.

Argghhhh! I Like Beer, a trivial novelty though inoffensive enough country song I remember from a long time ago is now an actual beer ad, although they screwed with the lyrics, and they play it all the time, and something about the performance/production just bugs me, and they play it all the time, and it's stuck in my head and won't leave. Arggghhhhh!

The man behind that song is actually a great songwriter and it's worth the time to explore his work. Not unlike Roger Miller, most may know him for a "novelty" song, but his catalog is filled with great narrative songs.

Two picks for excellent, upbeat funky (though very different flavors of funk), mostly instrumental music:

Khruangbin - Asian-inspired funk out of Houston, Texas. The lead guitarist can flat-out play.

Vulfpeck - Old-school motown-inspired funk out of SE Michigan. All of them are exceptional musicians, but the bass player steals the show most of the time.

Couldn't sleep at all last night because these two songs were going through my head incessantly...and sometimes simultaneously!

Alphonso Johnson - "Bahama Mama"

King Crimson - "Cat Food"
