I got in some good trips this summer including two Downieville visits and a Tahoe mtn ride. That Tahoe ride worked me good. Pedaling is 10x harder at elevation.

A couple days ago, I pulled the Masi off of the wall, dusted it off, and pumped up the 23c tubulars to 110 psi. Took a quick 12-mile ride around the neighborhood and pegged the fun meter.

Last Sunday was a near perfect day for a great ride with my friends Laura, Andy, Cheryl, and Gail on the beautiful trails at Minnewaska State Park Preserve and Mohonk Preserve, just west of the Hudson River in upstate New York. For those of you who may have never been there, the Shawangunks (or just plain “Gunks”) are a geologically and biologically different ridge of high hills between the Hudson River and the Catskill Mountains. They feature some wonderful scenery and views, as well as at least 50 miles of well-maintained carriage roads suitable for just about any wide-tired bike. In June the Mountain Laurels and Rhododendrons bloom, and in the fall the colors are spectacular, so those are my favorite times to go. This time around it looked really dry, but I’ve never been there in August, so I don’t have much context. But it was definitely dry, with the famous Awosting Falls turned into “Awosting Trickle,” the Peterskill also reduced to a small rivulet, and many of the areas I’m used to seeing swampy were bone dry. We rode a large 27.75-mile figure-eight, losing Gail when she had to leave to host an art opening, and Andy when he left to go spend time with his young grandson. That left Laura, Cheryl, and I to finish out the route, and so we enjoyed the spectacular views of the Hudson Valley from Hamilton Point. As usual, once you get a mile or so away from the visitor center the trails are virtually empty, so we didn’t have to dodge much traffic. To end out great day, we stopped in at New Paltz’ tradition favorite, P&G’s restaurant downtown. A great day! (All photos shot with my Panasonic Lumix ZS200 and my iPhone 13 Pro.)

Out for 31 miles today on the Coppi Mega T bike. This is one fine steel ride for sure. Cool this morning so it made for a really nice ride.

Another fantastic weekend in Prescott riding gravel and single track. Lots of wild storms made it pretty interesting and at one point riding through flood waters had me navigating hundreds of crawfish with pinchers clacking warning me off.

It’s rare to have to spray mud from the bike in arizona…
