Two rides worth documenting this week:

We have a popular (bordering on famous) climb in the mountains above our valley known locally as "The Alpine Loop." My cousin and I went ahead and rode the route this week even though there's still quite a bit of snow up top. The lure of riding the top sections of the climb without cars (gates still down!) was just too strong. Six sections of snow hiking up the north side, two sections of snow hiking down the south side.



The payoff for such a foolhardy adventure was absolute stillness at the top. The point at which the above photo was taken is in a basin between two peaks. It was so quiet and still up there that every time a squirrel rustled in the leaves it echoed back and forth across the basin. I've never experienced such stillness at this location. It was a special moment.





Rode Dawn Patrol up two of the climbs in the hills above our town. Chilly. Something so magical about the pre-dawn quiet on the mountaintop, watching the sunrise slide across the valley floor below.

Double ride today. 1st to catch the sunrise on top of Tam where we saw Venus and Jupiter still hanging out together. And the second, was with my son to the top of Tam via Eldridge grade. Life is good.

Rough day at the Nova Eroica yesterday. But at least the pictures looked good.

Rough because of the wind? It seemed pretty bad driving up and was blowing hard when I went to pick up my registration stuff

Rough because my wife and I missed the lunch stop, had no food from mile 15 on, had no water between mile 25 and 60. Ran out of water, wife vomitted after she finally got some water, and support on the course seemed rather disappointing for a $150 entry fee.

Wind was only bad for the last 6 miles or so.

Sorry to hear about the course troubles. Unfortunately, it's pretty much been the same story from day one.

Sorry to hear, hope your wife is feeling better.

It’s weird that the spread is so good at Cayucos when you’ve barely been riding and don’t need food, then so meager thereafter. I think that may be a throwback to the Paso Robles start, when Cayucos was the stop before the final climb.

The lack of water is unforgivable, previously there was water at the top of each climb. Also the route marking wasn’t very good, especially since they changed the route from what’s published. Not much reason to stick around at the end either.

I’m hoping this is largely attributable to the 2 year carryover, but maybe not.

Nope, like Saxon said, it's been pretty much this way since the start, at least for the first and second year, which was the last I attended. I had hoped that they would eventually get their act together, especially when the Italians took over total control. It's really a shame, because from what I hear, the Eroica events are pulled off really well in Italy and the UK.

That sucks. I rode the Nova and had the same thoughts about the support being thin. I also thought the signage was lacking. I missed a turn and got rewarded with an extra 18 miles. This was my second time. It's a beautiful route and area. I'll come back and do a DIY version with some friends, but I won't be registering for another one.
