The piston ring stuff is definitely intentional whether it lead to more oil burn or not.

Cylinder linings and piston ring changes + low viscosity oil were all planned changes that were part of the whole drive to more horsepower and better fuel economy.

Hold onto that one! The V-8 in the 4Runners is virtually indestructible.

Update on the Taos, the rear wiper now runs occasionally on its own as well as the front.

I did take it to dealer. Told me the low coolant is probably an air bubble from the head gasket R&R when they refilled the coolant. I wasn't buying it, but decided to give the dealer the benefit of the doubt. Told the service advisor, if I come back in a month or two and coolant is down to same level again, adding more coolant won't cut it. He agreed.
As for the wipers, they either need them to start on their own when they have it, or it needs to throw a code, otherwise we're SOL.
I can understand where they're coming from regarding the wipers, losing patience with the coolant.
Hurry up n' wait.
