For you watch nerds...does Rolex hold a patent over the little magnifying bubble over the date? Not seen another...w/o it I couldn’t read the date on my GMTMaster.

Not sure about the magnifier, but might. I do know it holds many, many patents. That the never enforced or will enforce. and when I say many, I mean MANY.

Absolutely not. There are scores of manufacturers who utilize it. I myself don't care for the magnifier or "cyclops" as I think it ruins the dial balance, but Seiko, Panerai, Cartier, Tag, Ball et al all have modern models with the date magnifier.

I’ve seen the cyclops on other brands, but they don’t seem to work very well. The Rolex cyclops really magnifies.

All a matter of personal taste.
I’ve had several Rolex watches..Explorer 2, Deepsea Sea-Dweller, and currently a GMT Master 2 (Batman).
I got rid of the Deepsea because it didn’t have a cyclops....I never got used to a Rolex without it.

My Fenix is changing my thinking in so much as I'm enjoying all the metrics.
I still respect the automatic movement, but for now, the Garmin is getting all of my wrist time.
