It's not often that I can ride the Goey Pond loop in mid-December. It was a beautiful mild sunny day.
Today you really had to be alert on the shaded north-facing hillsides.
This is one area, with about 30 feet of frictionless ice floe going down a steep section of road.
Luckily I was traveling uphill coming to this one.

Heat wave in Northern Michigan means 38 degrees and dry tarmac. But the gravel roads, as you can see, won't open until the end of March.

50Fs, sunny and not even that windy. I said, eff working, it's mid-December and someone needs to appreciate climate change

This ride starts from home in the middle of the Island and goes to Aquinnah, with a loop at the end which is the Lobsterville Rd, Lighthouse Rd, and Moshup Trail. Back in downtown West Tisbury I head east to Morning Glory Farm (eat giant pecan sandy cookie) and then ride a ten mile loop around Katama, then head back home. A tad over 52 miles.

This past Thursday may have been our “last hurrah” ride for 2021, since 3-5 inches of snow was forecast for our Capital Region of upstate New York for this Saturday (we ended up getting just an icy crust here). But the temperatures got to almost SIXTY degrees, so me and some friends decided to get on the gravel roads while the gettin’s good! We started out our masochistic climb-a-palooza at the Chatham Brewery in downtown Chatham, NY, riding east out of town and into the hills of far eastern Columbia County and motivating ourselves with visions of post-ride pilsners and IPA’s that awaited us at ride’s end.

It rained a lot the previous night, so we ran into some gooey unpaved roads, but there was never anything that we couldn’t ride through. We cruised the entire length of Old Macedonia Road, disregarding the “Dead End” signs that had obviously been put out to deter through traffic. There were lots of beautiful forest views, lots of burbling streams after the rain, and a few spots where we could glimpse the peaks of the Catskills far to the west across the Hudson River. It was a singularly warm and beautiful day and we enjoyed it to the utmost before arriving back at the brewery for cold, locally brewed craft beers and some of their great pub food.

Our tally at the end of the day was 25.88 miles and 3,025 feet of climbing, so just over 116 feet of vertical per mile. Ouch! All these photos were taken with my Panasonic Lumix ZS70 that I carry in my jersey pocket.

Those types of roads and routes are what I miss about riding in central MA and the Northeast. Looking good!

How are you keeping the bike in your possession at various stopping places if you go inside? Or is bike theft much less common?
