Lovely long weekend exploring more of the dirt and gravel around the Riviere Rouge in Quebec, about an 90min NW of Montreal. Colors are great right now, and had a great detour due to some roads being closed for hunting, but the scenery was great.

I dig this. My normal wardrobe is finally in style, again.

Just coming back from Sea Otter Classic, with all the flannel on hand, I felt like I was in Seattle at the Crocodile waiting to hear Mudhoney open for Soundgarden while swilling some Oly. No snark intended. Between flannel and camo, I don't have much else. Yes, my wife loves how I dress.

Vermont riding

I was up in NH and VT this past week. Tuesday was a great day, 109 miles in central VT. This is a 102 mile loop I used to ride on my birthday in August, and I hadn't ridden it in well over a decade so I wanted to see if I could. A bridge out on RT 100 required a detour and an additional 7 miles for 109 total. Elevation was 5,100 ft. The last time I rode more than this distance was 2005, when I was riding a recumbent and rode seven centuries.

The loop starts and ends in Windsor VT. The first 1-1/2 hour was in the fog, very damp, temps in the mid 50Fs. Eventually the fog cleared and the day was quite nice as the mercury climbed above 70F. I rode my Strong and was happy in places to have the 38mm tires and the disc brakes. Halfway through the ride is the intersection of RT 100 and RT 4, across from the access road to Killington Ski Area, which is the high point.

I used Nuun tabs in my water bottles, and drank about one gallon during the roughly nine hours I was out ( a bit under 7-1/2 hours on the bike, just under 15 mph average). I ate three giant pecan sandies cookies as my fuel . I felt very fortunate to have no cramps and to feel good, and at the end I could have gone further. Having the custom bike was worth it, nothing hurt at the end! Max grade was just under 15%, and max speed was a bit over 43 mph but I needed the brakes on that long twisty downhill on 100A!

The photos show the start and end in Windsor; getting out of the fog on the way up to Barnard; a pond on RT 100; a refueling stop in Ludlow; Mt. Ascutney; and the Cornish-Windsor covered bridge.

Short ride up in Vermont

I had a short time slot when staying in Dummerston VT with friends, and crossed the West River on the covered bridge and rode up to the end of these three dirt roads. I have to ride three times as far on Martha's Vineyard to get this amount of elevation
