B-day ride this evening. The lovely sunset was a pretty nice way to end the day and the ride.

Been in California for two weeks and managed to climb Mt. Diablo and Mt. Tam. Out in the north bay in Sonoma County. Riding out here has been really challenging that if I ever want to get out it’s an hour to hour and a half battling with headwinds and rolling hills. But very beautiful and lots of options and loops!

Took yesterday off to spend a pleasant (but hot) afternoon riding the quiet roads north and west of Leesburg, VA in Loudoun County. Lots of smooth pavement with very few cars. Waterford is a well preserved and pretty village, established in 1733.

Not my photo, but from friends that stay/ride in the area:

Same place, but one day apart with and without the cloud cover. This point is 720m asl, while down in the valley it is 300m. The Franschoek valley in the Western Cape (RSA).

50 miler this morning with a climb up one of the local mountain routes. Started clear and then a cold front brought in the nasty smoke from out west. Only had the cellphone so crappy pictures only.

At the one crest with the road and view ahead:

Heading back up again on an abandoned road closed now to vehicles:

Farther up on the route:

Meadow along the way, used to hang out here a lot in the 90's:

Still heading up hill, the road is in decent shape for bike:

Large meadow up top full of willows with beaver ponds hiding in them:

Today's bike of choice. Turned out to be a bad one as the winds were gusting over 30 mph which made for one sketchy descent. Side winds buffeted this one bad, never quite got to 50mph going down:

Ran into a bear up top:

Cool little barn on the way back into one small town:

How bad things had gotten by the time I got home. There's a huge mountain hidden in that smoke. Those homes you can barely make out are not even 1/2 mile away:

Mixed gravel and paved ride north of Cave Creek to Humboldt Observatory at 5200’. Scenic, very fast descent, and didn’t see another person the entire ride.
