My New Years Eve ride, close to Cape Town, on the SW tip of Africa… a small town called Kleinmond. The Cape Epic used this area in the early 2010s. This is looking East towards Hermanus.

We just stopped here for a picnic a week ago! Tasty food and great ambiance with the river back there.

I have been exploring some of the greenways and trailheads here in South Knoxville and find myself pleasantly surprised every time I turn down a new road.

Mt. Baldy
I've ridden up to the base of the ski lift at Mt. Baldy numerous times; Saturday was the first time I've ridden to The Notch, the cafe/restaurant at the top of that same lift. This added piece is 3.5 miles, 1600' at an average of 8.8%, only the first half mile is paved. Pretty solid effort considering that you've already climbed over 5k' and you begin this portion at 6k of elevation.
It's always nice when your buddy captures you in what could be a cycling tourism poster. |

i've ridden to the ski lifts a couple times myself and have been about as twisted toast as i've ever been once i got there. the last time was followed by a descent where i went near hypothermic, lol. never been to the notch top. maybe this fall, i need to make an LA work trip for a bunch of clients. i'm hoping to sneak a day of riding in.

My buddy had characterized the offroad portion as "fire road," which is mostly accurate but there were definitely a few places where that description falls short, whether because of large bore gravel or very loose sand or both. I got both of the following comments while traversing it: Hiker: "get a gravel bike" MTBer: "this trail is really better for mountain bikes" |
