Hey all -

I just came into the posession of a 1997 Cannondale M900 frameset in pretty amazing condition.

The seller was kind enough to include the stock bars/stem, and original CODA brakes.

I'm going to turn my focus first to wheels, since they'll determine what I can do with the drivetrain. I'd like to run @ 1x and use it as a commuter.

Hesitant to go for a 30 year old 26'' wheelset and have limited options for fast rolling tires, what are thoughts on running 650b on a project like this? Rear spacing @ 135, front @ 100

I'd stick with 26" - 650b conversions of 26ers typically take a big tire clearance hit, unless you have a frame with unusually large tire clearance for the era. As hesitant as I am to recommend Rene Herse, they make fast rolling 26" tires in both 1.8" and 2.3" varieties. And the 2.3" is in reality barely a 2.1".

How do you plan to get the brakes working?

How about 26ers I've owned.
In 1998 I picked up this Litespeed Obed FS. For it's time a good bike. The amp rear end had a little flex and you had to stay seated to climb efficiently. I sold that and bought the Koi Adroit. What a fun bike. Harsh ride but light, climbed like stink and very snappy. Then I quit biking and went back to running. Until 2006 when I had my knee scoped and had to choose between cycling and running. I opted for the bike and bought this 2005 Epic.
What a long strange trip it's been.

I've opted to chase the 26'' rabbit. There are some nice NOS Ritchey Vantage rims around the internet, and I picked up a set of high polish rim brake Chris King hubs from a super nice guy for a steal.

I haven't had much luck with the gravel king SK in NYC, they're too slow and it feels like riding in mud. I'm interested in the simworks x panaracer homage tires though, they look like they can hold some dirt but have a nice solid track down the center for the tarmac moments.

No more production of high end non tapered steerer suspension forks will make this great bike obsolete at some point.

But until that happens, I am continuing to add carbon!

Turned a '93 Trek 970 into something resembling a dirt drop tourer. It's an incredibly fun ride.

Lots of tire talk, so I'll say the RH Humptulips Ridge 26x2.3 roll a whole lot faster and quieter than the knobs suggest they might. I keep them on all year long, even with metal fenders.

New project in the garage, a 90's Specialized S-Works M2. Should have it rolling next week, plan is to try it out with some local riding and try to get a vintage bikes group on our local weeknight races next year.



Its getting a deep clean, headset/fork service, new chain cables and tires.
