On my Davidson, 35s don't leave enough room under the fenders to give me confidence on gravel--for that application I switch to 650B x 38 wheels and Tektro 559s with the pads all the way at the bottom. I can do this because, due to an accident, I had to have a new fork made for my Davidson, and I asked for a bit more clearance than I had on the old fork. Also--I had to file out the slots on the front brake about 1mm to get the pads low enough.
