I'm not a luddite, but I have a Colnago Extreme Power with Record 10 and a Hampsten Strada Bianca with Chorus 10 (and my wife has a Parlee with Record 10). You'd be hard-pressed to convince me that there is another group which is as reliable, durable, and serviceable as Campy 10 for "regular road riding."

Cause with Shimano back then you could mix in XT parts to get extreme range on your road bike and it all worked very well other than having to keep a different chain for it. Somewhere along the way they started making stuff more and more incompatible between MTB/Road. |

SRAM offers that compatibility nowadays... with wireless.

What I don't get in any case is now it seems more people want to ride around with that huge range all the time.
I really don't. I only want to swap the gears for the rides I know have that level of extreme climbing, which has almost always been just for hillclimb races, and then with a more mild version of it for something like a 100+ mile ride that has bad mountain passes in it. 53/39 + 12-29 has still been fine for me for the most extreme rides I've done in the last 10 years that were 90%+ pavement. I would go lower for a hillclimb like Mt. Washington. But I have really hated 50/34 + 12-30 when I've done that around where I live. It's way too low. I get AXS for people who want lower gears cause I really don't like 50/34 with a tight spaced cassette, it ends up leaving me in a zone where I'm having to shift the front derailleur way too often. |

The 10-speed Record on my Fierte IT shifts better than anything.

Not sure where you live, but I live on a hill that has a 17% grade at the beginning and end of every ride. No way around it. If I don't run something close to 34-30, I end up walking home. Not fun.

But wireless with a 2x chainring is terrible. I had that on my gravel bike and it's being replaced by Chorus 12s.
With SRAM AXS you can't shift the FD and RD simultaneously. You have to shift one, wait a second, then the other. It completely screws up the pedaling fluidity. It's awful.

I am starting to think that this electronic shifting business may have some advantages after all…..

I've been riding this bike for 25 years and the Chorus 10 parts are circa 2000 maybe. Still the most reliable shifting I've ever had.
