Eh. If you use them with (ideally latex) tubes they’re wonderful. And at least in my experience flat-resistant and surprisingly durable.

I’ve got a set of Barlow Pass with more than 2K miles, mostly off-road, some pretty nasty single track… and only one flat I can recall. And currently running a set of Bon Jon Pass and Switchback Hills with similar experiences, although with lower miles at his point.

If it was only the tires, I would give them a pass. There entire operation intent is snake oil reincarnate. Even the company name is a fantasy.

man, Jan gets under your skin like the word "quiver" or "Nago" gets under mine.. Jan is selling an idea of what he thinks cycling can be.. either you like it or not.. either way, he has some very nice products that a lot of people love.. I like the idea of a lot of Jan's stuff, just usually can't get past the prices and I usually don't ride far enough to justify a lot of the gear he sells (front box bags, etc).. but I love reading the magazine (which I need to renew to..)

djg pal, I am truly sorry for your suffering, life is too short to have to bother with such things, hope you can move on quickly from here to better options and focus back on riding.

I have ridden on Rene Herse 700x32mm, 700x35mm, 650bx42mm, 650bx48mm tires extensively. All tubed except the 650bx42mm, I tried with mixed success in using it in a tubeless format, one wheel got sealed and ran fine, the other just wouldn't seal, they are different wheelset. I suspect it has something to do with the tire/rim combination, but i did not spend to much time trying to figure that out, just put in a tube and carried on riding.

Overall, I would say the Rene Herse tires give a very nice ride, they DON'T actually suck in the supple ride department. I would not write them off.

After an early flat that cost me 3-4 minutes, my chances at a result had more or less gone out the window.

If I was racing with real hopes of a good outcome this would outrage me.

He sounds like a good sport though, and good on him for fighting it out to the end. Man, it would suck if you had the legs and the lungs and it really was about the bike holding you back.

One has to have a good amount of data to draw conclusions about tire durability in all of it's manifestations.

And good reliable outcomes don't make memorable news like bad outcomes do, meaning that internet buzz can be misleading.

I have "pinch-flatted" tubeless tires and these kinds of punctures can be tiny (too tiny to poke a 1.8mm spoke through) yet hard to seal.
A supple tire of course needs more pressure to prevent such tire damage.
I used regular Hurricane Ridge knobbies on Mavic AllRoad wheels. The installation, seating and sealing have been easy and perfect through more than a year of use, though I did experience sidewall weeping using Mavic's white sealant. Regular Orange Seal (added to the original fill) stopped the sidewall weeping.

My RH tires grip like a real knobby, which is why I use them for CX and all of my off-road mileage. But they are plenty smooth and seem impressively efficient on the road for such a full-treaded tire.
