The title specifies "virtual". Please don't tell me you did that on an indoor stationary bike. That would be a whole new level of hell.

I have everything from Conti 4-seasons to Herse knobbies. The Rene Herse knobby tires do a pretty good job. I rode my Warbird on both 42mm 700 and 48mm 650b over some pretty snow covered terrain earlier in the season without issue! Moots Psychlo X with WTB Exposures for a few road rides. They never felt as supple as the Herse tires, but did a good job. I have been riding my Mooto X ybb single speed with xc tires for the past week. The ybb seems to keep the rear end of the bike pretty planted. Running an Ardent Race up front and a similar tread Mavic rear. Having a front suspension and soft tail gives it an advantage IMO. Since "real" winter hit, I've been only riding my rigid Kona Raijin.
Originally had Thunderburts on it, had problems with multiple punctures on every single ride, first with Orange Seal, then with Stan's. Switched to GravelKing SK 700x50's and have had not one single tire related issue in about 500 miles. I ride outdoors. Do what you want or like, but honestly the longer your trainer ride is, the less I am impressed. I agree with your sentiment above, particularly if you’re posting it on a forum such as this one. Having said that, I assume you’re referring to my buddy Waldo’s post. He admittedly did a very poor job of wording his Strava ride. I was confused as well. But it was all on the road. 200 miles. 14,000 feet of climbing. The numbers don’t lie. Hats off. |

That is DEFINITELY impressive. Around here, especially in the winter, it's a bit frustrating to look at weekly club results on Strava as I only ride outside. It's a struggle for sure to get 95+ miles a week to meet my goal. A bit harder now than when I lived 90 miles south, as well. Perfect example...last week rode 105 miles, 10,300' of climbing, doesn't even put me in the top 3 with folks riding 275-300 miles a week, all on Zwift. Not even one ride out in the elements. SPP |

OTH, as a personal trainer, I applaud people getting on their bikes and trying to be fit. It’s commendable. But the most intense session indoors will never correlate to a similar ride outdoors. Not even close. And, given that Strava is inherently competitive in nature, there should be some kind of distinction made. |

There are environmental factors present while riding outdoors you simply can’t replicate indoors. Unless you have access to powerful and expensive wind tunnels. Or you ride your stationary bike while dodging actual cars. Or blast the AC in the middle of Arctic winters to replicate what people like Hilltoperny or Slowpokepete do. No comparison.

I just did a 70-mile ride with almost 11,000ft of elevation, all sunny, temperatures in the 50s and 60s. And it was all fun. I could have done half of the work in third of the time on a trainer, and have gotten the same training benefit, and none of the fun. I think virtual rides are hard in their own ways. I do wish Strava allowed filtering out virtual rides in the feed. But the I would miss friends doing feats like virtual double Everesting over a weekend. |

I really wish we didn't think we are better than each other because we do things differently... its just bikes... as long as we are getting healthier/having fun, it really should not matter. |

I rode outdoors. The organizers of the ride require us to call it virtual — as opposed to a ride that takes place on the actual course on the day of the event — to earn California Triple Crown credit.

Once more, this time with the map. The California Triple Crown police make us call our own doubles ‘virtual.’

I've wondered about that. In town we've had virtual 5Ks. Never bothered to follow up but I assumed that meant running alone or on a treadmill. Same for CTC, ie, virtual is code for alone?

Not alone, but 'not on the official course on the official date.' They call the actual event ‘live.’
