Ride yesterday . . . Still fried!

Yesterday we did a great but tough gravel loop out of Spencertown, NY. We covered just shy of 30 miles through the rolling countryside east of the Hudson River in northeastern Columbia County. The wonderful, empty gravel roads seem endless.

Temp was in the low 40’s as seven of us shoved off from Spencertown, a tiny hamlet that seemed to have as many churches as there are houses. Just west of town we started climbing and that went on and on and ON! But it was worth it to see the scenery and spend some great time with friends.

Three of us turned back at various points, so that left just we “Gang of Four” to tackle the whole 30 miles and 3252 feet of vertical. We also stopped at mile 16.1 so I could celebrate breaking 4,000 miles for the season. Fortunately, the “magic spot” didn’t turn out to be in the middle of a highway intersection.

After the ride my friend Steve and I headed over the Chatham Brewery in (where else?) Chatham to enjoy some of their great food and, ah, recovery beverages. Boy, it’s sure feelin’ good to spend today sitting down!

Route map is HERE.

Well I went and tried another gravel'r. 2020 Kona Rove ST collabro w Swift Industries. GRX 2x build. Really pretty frameset. 47mmx650b.

It was definitely more enjoyable to ride on the rough gravel than my last experience on 700x35mm - but I still just don't enjoy riding off the road as much as I do enjoy riding on the road. Is what it is.

I'll tell you what I do enjoy though - mid-ride wood-fired pizza w sourdough crust taken down in a park safely away from any itinerant breathers.

Clouds rolled over the mountains on the way back and temps dropped down just above 30 deg.

Ended up a little over 55mi and a bit under 4 hrs. A grand day out - next time I'll ride my Sachs there though - through farmland, on chipseal, like god intended.
