With all due respect dear benb, that's not quite correct. If the panels were perfectly flat they would *appear* to be slightly concave. So to make the panels look flat they are deliberately slightly convex.

This is similar to what May said the Rolls Royce radiator builders did to make the radiator look perfectly straight.

When the ancient Greeks built the Parthenon, they knew if they made the columns perfectly straight they would *appear* to be slightly narrow in the middle. The Greeks wanted the Parthenon to look perfect, so they deliberately made the columns slightly wider in the middle to compensate.

This is a quirk of visual perception one learns about in art school. It's pretty cool May can trot this stuff out in a YouTube car review.

pretty sure James May is fairly educated (not to say he should have known this), and fairly cultured.. he is into a LOT of things and many of them have some type of engineering connection from what I can tell.. super interesting dude for sure!

I am sure that works but I'm curious how you secure the bike inside the bed and it sure seems performative, especially with driving around with the branded (Fox?) blanket over the bed all the time.

For one or two bikes can't you just lay them in the bed and run a cable lock through something inside the bed? Gotta be an eyelet somewhere?

I mean it's kind of bad when a minivan can have 3 bikes inside without taking any wheels off and then still carry 3-4 adults inside.

I just throw mine in the back of the old Doge and go. It fits two easily. Any more than that would need a system unless you don't mind piling them up. I mean they probably get more beat up ON the trail than compared to getting to the trial.
