Perfect ride up to Alpine Dam

Alpine Dam by JW

On ride back... frame cracked... non-catastrophic, but frame needs replaced...

Sorry to hear.
So, now N+1 is just N.

Alpine Dam is my favorite ride in the world.

Today's photo dump! Great ride out and back through a couple National Forests. All pictures taken on the same road.

What route?
Curious how you get to a 100 miles on road bike roads (~paved).

While on the ride yesterday, I saw an interesting collection of old, rusting trucks.

Good question. Attached is the GPS map. The blue dotted lines are roads I traveled more than once. I am going to see how much I can reduce duplication in future rides. Part of that includes riding roads I'd rather not - I could include a loop down County Rd and over to Barnes and back up to Oak Bluffs, but I'd rather ride the Katama "teardrop" twice if it's not way gusty. I rode the WT/Edgartown Rd three times between Old County and Barnes, I ride the road because the bike paths are too crowded.

The ice cream shops I passed Friday on my long one were still closed, more's the pity, I was jonesin'! I ran out of food and water, ended up with a slice of pizza and a jumbo ice coffee at mile 77, fueled me for the last 24 miles.

Ride last Wednesday . . .

. . . to Boreas Ponds in the Adirondacks, starting in North Hudson, NY. The road was washed out and impassable for vehicles just off the highway, so my buddy Dave and I had the place to ourselves. The first 8 miles up the hill from North Hudson are paved, then we turn onto Gulf Brook Road and 7 more miles gravel. The road was washed out in numerous places, but I doubt it will all get fixed this year, given how the covid pandemic has punched a hole in the state budget.

The area was formerly used for logging by Finch-Pruyn and it;'s laced with logging roads. They sold it to the Nature Conservancy, which turned around and sold it to the State of New York. It was partially opened to the public in 2016, but since then all the usual special interest groups have been arguing about who should be allowed to do what . . . snowmobiles, ATV'ers, MTB'ers, hikers, equestrians, ad nauseum . . .

We had the place to ourselves this day and it's one of the best views you can get of the Adirondack High Peaks.

Another fun ride last Thursday . . .

. . . . up in the Adirondacks, this one with HilltopperNY who met me at the Paradox Brewery in North Hudson, NY, just off I-87. He was on his No.22 Drifter with some super wide tanwalls (He'll have to supply details) and I was on my Jamis Renegade with Donnelly 40mm knobbies.

We rode east through the hills to the Pennfield Museum at Ironville, NY. Ironville is known as the "Birthplace of the Electrical Age", being the site of the first industrial application of electricity in the United States. The museum was closed, but there were some nice outdoor exhibits.

Thirty total miles, 18 on gravel, and on the gravel part we saw 3 cars--actually two cars, because we saw the same car twice. Beautiful day, perfect temperatures, and the brewery was open for takeout when we got back. All of these were taken with my Panasonic Lumix ZS50, which fits nicely in my jersey pocket.

I can't think of a much better place to ride than the 'Dacks.

Photos from your rides.

Gorgeous Memorial Day, and a rare Serotta sighting, that nice green & yellow scheme on bare metal (guessing a Ti Legend? — if you have such a bike and descended Tuna around midday, sound off)

Always tempted to jump in this lake on a hot day, but I think it’s verboten

Rode up to Jockey Hollow National Park in Morristown, NJ this morning. Jockey Hollow was a winter encampment for George Washington's troops in 1779.

There's some great riding and climbing around here if you're ever in this area of NJ! Early morning there's rarely any cars too. But you do see the occasional black bear.

I was riding 42mm 650b Soma Grand Randonneur tires that look like they measure a bit wider on the Reynolds ATR wheels. Great day, company and scenery! Great Pics as well and the Paradox Brewery Pilsner at the end really hit the spot!

Must have done the ride from Saratoga to Paradox Lake a hundred times, stopping at North Hudson and Paradox Brewery every time! You had the wrong beer though...The Beaver Bite IPA is much better! There are very few breweries in upstate NY that I would return too, but that is one of them!

Northern Colorado kind of spoils you!

Open for takeout right now, but will be open for outdoor use June 12th iirc. We just had a beer outside and chatted with the owner after the ride. Come on up when you are ready Nick! The roads up here are always pretty bare and I have a few new spots for some good gravel and lake riding. Things up this way are pretty calm.

Dave and I did a ride out in Scoharie county a couple of weeks ago that had endless gravel and lots of good climbs! He has all kinds of other good routes up in the ADK mountains as well!
