We're Havin' a Heatwave!

More than a week ago we went from unseasonably cool temps to stifling heat and humidity in the span of about a day, and yes, I'm complaining — but mostly because there's no end in sight. Still, it was nice to be out riding.

Loop to Jordan

I'm still in a fair amount of pain (when making specific movements) from my Memorial Day OTB crash but I'm able to ride. Anything more than a regular breath still elicits a sharp pain in my ribs. The doctor thought I'd be fine to resume all of my activities after one week but I knew that was overly optimistic. My golf clubs remain idle for now. It's good to be riding again.

Gimme Some Water, Cool, Cool Water!

It's been ridiculously hot here in the Midwest and much of the US the past two weeks. I typically like to ease into this sort of weather rather than how we went from unseasonably cool temps to unseasonably hot temps as we did. Still, it's nice to be out riding. This ride was a longish one at 128 miles (206 km) and for just about all of it, I had cottonmouth in a way I can't ever recall experiencing. I must've stopped at least a half dozen times at convenience stores along the way to try and quench my thirst. I suppose it didn't help that I forgot to bring along my salt tabs.

River Bottoms Loop from Home

I call this ride my River Bottoms Loop. It's 61 miles (98 km) of busy highways, fire roads, singletrack, and patches of deep sand that my 38 mm Gravel King tires are no match for. Tall grasses along the river trails this time of year are making for some obstructed sightlines in places. There were so few other riders and I'm not sure why. It was a beautiful Saturday.

Making it up as I Go

After two years of gravel riding, I've been doing more road riding this year. It's been nice to be back on my road bike and enjoying some of the routes I've not ridden in a while. I was doing a fair amount of group riding before the pandemic and while I enjoyed that, there's something about solitary rides that works best for me. For this video, I used my GoPro's Timewarp feature more than I normally do so as to give viewers a better idea of the roads and countryside here in Minnesota. Safe travels! 🥂

Loop to Jordan

Today's ride was a 50-mile (80 km) mix of pavement and gravel. My road bike has been getting the nod lately over my gravel bike so it was nice to change it up and ride gravel again. There's a sereneness about gravel that is more difficult for me to find while riding pavement — lots less traffic.

Lakeville to St. Paul Loop

This 47 mile (76 km) loop into St. Paul has been a favorite of mine lately. It's just the right distance to get in a nice workout. Plus, it has a couple of climbs that I like. If there's a northerly wind, this is the ride I'll likely be doing.

Independence Day Ride

My gravel bike has been my go-to ride for the river bottoms lately but I kept it stabled yesterday and brought along my full suspension Orbea Oiz M20 instead. It gave me more of a fighting chance through some of the speed-sucking sandier sections along the north side of the river.

Wednesday Night Gravel!

Our usual Tuesday Night Gravel ride had to be moved to Wednesday night this week due to the weather and some much-needed rain. Conditions of the gravel and the weather last night were ideal — smooth and cool!

TNG and Off the Back!

Here's some video from last night's Tuesday Night Gravel ride out of Northfield, MN, where I at times struggled to hang with the group. Lots-o-fun! 🥂

Lakeville to Red Wing via Prescott

If there's an easterly wind and I'm looking for a longish ride, this is where you'll find me. Harry Chapin died 40 years ago this past week. This is maybe my favorite song of his. Listen closely.

TNG, Done Dirt Cheap

Our Tuesday Night Gravel ride out of Northfield, MN is such a fun ride with a good group of like-minded riders who don't mind pushing one another and being pushed. They're advertised as a social ride in the range of 15-17 mph (24-27 kph) but, depending on the group, we'll oftentimes exceed that — last night being one of those times. Lots of dust and lots of fun!
