I too would argue that the DT-1, if not the most, is at least one of the most singularly important motorcycles of any age. It near single-handedly created one of the largest categories of any era. Almost every off-road motorcycle that exists can be traced back to it. The DT-1 allowed anyone to expand their horizons in an affordable and practical way. And then there was the inevitable accessory and modification markets. It made for a triple bonanza.

I was a Yamaha dealer in Hawaii when the DT-1 was introduced and enjoyed the sales boom it created. Every successive model and their spin-offs, 80, 90, 125, 175 and 360cc models were instant hits.

I have on occasion over the years, flirted with the idea of getting a motorcycle but have always rationalized not getting one, for safety reasons.

I am now in the process of moving to Vashon Island, a rural island just a few miles from Seattle with a population of about 11,000. Vashon is one of the better cycling communities in the metro Seattle area which might make it one of the better areas in which to ride a motorcycle.

I would love to hear from any Paceliners who may have added a motorcycle to their collection of two wheelers, what your experience has been like, happy that you did it, or think that this is a crazy idea.

Also if you have any bike (motor) suggestions I would appreciate it. TIA

I last had a motorcycle 30 years ago, and would not want to ride one regularly in that area.

I moved to a rural area and bought and old BMW Airhead...an '84 R80ST previously owned by forum member Adam Paiva.

I think your logic makes perfect sense to me.

Sure, there are other hazards and risks, but limited automobile traffic is what I like when it comes to being on two wheels, motorcycle or bicycle.

I love the fact that there is a Grom in the mix. I have had my share of CBR, GSXR... litre bikes but some of my most fun has been on 300cc and below motorcycles.

I used to be a year round rider, and it was great to be able to commute back and forth to work on a moto. But now I still really like having one to get around in nice weather and I'm happy riding around on a vintage 1975 honda. Fast enough to be fun and get around, not so fast that it ever gets me in trouble and its been super reliable for the past 2 seasons.

Well if you want to give it a try, take the MSF course. Then if you are still go, get yourself a small displacement, used and inexpensive moto to cut your teeth on. After a few months you'll know one way or the other if the experiment 'took'.
