In no particular order:

Brooklyn Bridge -- Ken Burns before he became Ken Burns

The Donner Party -- by Ken's more talented brother Rick

Burden of Dreams -- if you're into Herzog but would rather not watch Herzog

The Times of Harvey Milk

Hoop Dreams -- still the best sports doc I've ever seen

The Sorrow and the Pity -- (not super uplifting!)

When We Were Kings -- still the second best sports doc I've ever seen

If he can concentrate well enough, he should read "Into Thin Air" by Jon Krakauer (it's also a movie).

100% guaranteed to make him forget all his aches and pains and problems...

Man on Wire
comes to my mind as well.
I love the concert films, but don't consider them documentaries.
I am speaking of:
Stop Making Sense
The Last Waltz

It's the music with great filming, and a backstory.
This does not make a documentary, but a great film.

Ric Burn's documentary on the history of New York was fantastic:

Murder on a Sunday Morning.

Oscar-winning documentary that will have you outraged and then have faith in the legal system.

Amazing story and won the academy award for best doc.
I remember reading about that but didn't know they made it into a movie. Definitely want to check it out but don't have Netflix.

That was great read, didn't know they made it into a movie. Was it as good as the book?

Made me think of Aftershock, but that's a different one.

But I'll add it to the list: 3 part docuseries about the deadly 2015 earthquake that shook Nepal.

Also add: Ken Burns Country Music 8 part? docuseries.
