When I bought my Synapse it was at the time you could get rim or disk and I chose disk for the obvious reason that I had many very good wheel sets that are rim and none that are disk. I don't regret it. Prior to that I bought a poprad with the same option and in hindsight I wish I got disk because disk is just better fro cross and gravel.
IDK what the 'last great' were but the Synapse is a pretty good all rounder bike. |

The wonderful Road Logic comes to mind.

It's already been mentioned by a few others, but the Tarmac SL6 is fantastic, lives up to the hype. I am going to hang on to mine.

Order a Frank the Welder today. Have it in a few months.

Yeah that is cool. I can fit fat Vittoria 25s, but 28s are really a no go on my fork.

Having now embraced wide tyres with a disc frame, I'd struggle to go back to anything that couldn't take at least a 28 for a rim brake. As a result, if I was to try a rim-brake build again my picks of mass-produced frames would be (mostly ones that have already been picked up on here):

The last generation of rim brake Emonda will also take at least 30s. But yeah I am with you, as much as I have a soft spot for a nice rim brake roadie, and love my Tarmac SL6. The modern disc brake bike have largely prevailed for good reasons, it's not marketing.

I knew I'd forget one! I'd even go as far as to recommend the Emonda ALR, just on the basis that it also has a much more standard PF86 rather than Trek's silly BB90. Super smooth welds too!

Quote:
I've wondered how the ALR felt rolling. I've had a few Alloy road frames over the decades that rode gloriously. The 'ride' of my Race Shop Domanes [on second one] is not the main attraction, it is the long and low geom and 72.8 HTA with a low 52 trail front end. I can sit that geom indefinitely it seems like. Now both bonded round tube carbon frame bikes here have had that sublime road feel to me. Look 585 and Extreme power. I bought some Zipp 303s off Clean last month and have left the 26mm S-Works tire on for the EP, they ride super nice and have butyl tubes still. I am a solid latex tube rider and have been for decades and notice the ride improvement FWIW.
