Socks: I like Smartwool's zero cushion, but am not monogamous with them. I'll commute in almost any wool sock - dress, boot, Swedish military surplus (surprisingly long-lasting).

Outside of my running and cycling shoes, I have two pairs of shoes depending on the temperature. Chacos above 55 degrees, Blundstones below. That's for work and everyday wear.

Just got some Rockport Mavericks. They are super comfortable and look like a pair of Doc Martens I'd had for 30 years. The Rockports probably won't last 30 years, but neither will I.

I've been wearing alpaca socks from Pacas lately. They are very warm, just what I need in the NW.

The only shoe I will buy. Fits me perfectly #1 reason. Wears in not out and local cobbler is able to resole and keep the leather in great condition, making each shoe last years.

Early last year I got a painful and lingering case of plantar fasciitis, and after lengthy experimentation ended on some $40 Skechers foamycloud things. It was instant relief, and I've had no pain since. I'm also comfortable in my Birkenstock and Chacos sandals.

But, they look a little goofy in the office. I still wear them though.

I don't need fancy dress shoes at work, but semipro/simple would be good.

Your basic black shoe that works well with modern business casual, whatever that is...

Thanks.
For me, while my allen edmonds dress shoes are comfortable, they are not as comfortable as the cole haan grandpro sneakers I have (I believe I have the topspin model, but there are others with slightly different styling variations). While I don't wear these when wearing a suit, they do just fine on business casual days with slacks and a blazer. I also have a pair of cole haan original grand shoes and while very comfortable, not as comfortable as the grandpros for me.
