We had a rule. Only the legs of shelves and tires actually on the car at the time were allowed to touch garage floor.

It did not last, well 3 years maybe.

Yes I made that. Was supposed to be a prototype in 2007. Still using it though it weighs a ton made out of the high density plywood.

I bonded on some white laminate visible on the sides in the photos and loose enough tolerances so it wont bind.

Please share your project. I can use some ideas to refine this. I started by wanting a slide out drawer glide but to get one 6 foot long was way too much money.

For the record, it fits just fine in back of rented Nissan Armada. Safe and out of elements.

I really like the slide thing with the fork mount. I have a piece of wood with fork mounts for my Suburban, but it just holds the bikes upright. The slide thing would work like a work stand if extended out, pending parking lot clearance etc.

The Missus and I have a tandem. We mainly carried it on her (then) 2002 Civic, and then later on the TDI wagon. We have a Thule tandem mount. It has a pivoting fork mount so you can guide the fork up to it while the rear wheel of the tandem is still on the ground. However, I found it simple enough to put the rear wheel on the tray and guide the fork onto the mount. I put the fork blade in the long wheel tray so it doesn't accidentally dent the roof.

We haven't used the tandem in a while though. I think we'd carry it in the Suburban if we went anywhere. We haven't used the rack in a while.
