Totally disagree with this premise. There are zero Frenchisms on a 585, not that that would even be a bad thing. They’re absolutely normal bikes. English threaded BBs and normal geometry and headsets that have standard, non-proprietary bearings.

Again, I’m curious what’s going on because these may not be 2022 bikes but they’re not remotely wet noodles either. Don’t forget, 15 years ago these were ridden in the TdF. They’re not contemporary but they’re also not antiques made of tissue paper.

I ride two 585s regularly with 25mm tires and 20mm internal rims and I do OK I think in terms of power. Never ever had a rub.

I suspect it might be the wheel, too. It's just unusual that I didn't experience this on any other bike the wheel has been on.

I did a long ride today (PR up Old La Honda, here in the Bay area!) and on a fast technical descent, the 585 Ultra felt just as good as any bikes I've owned!

No pic yet but the pad spacing is about 3mm. I opened it up even more for my ride today and the pad rubbing reduced but was still there.

Yep, mine's a size S which is like a 51. I estimate the reach to be around 380-383mm which is pretty long for the size. I had to go 1cm shorter on the stem than usual to achieve the same fit as on my other bikes.

This surprises me this is still going on discussion wise.

This is usually why brake rub occurs, it is counter intuitive that too stiff a wheel is causal. But the wheel with more flex flexes at the contact point and across the fulcrum less so. Fulcrum=mounting point.

Took the 585 out for the first time in a while today. (Have been riding the Serotta and the Pinarello mostly.) It was my first ride since shrinking the stem from a 100 to a 90. It was a noticeable difference.

Every time I ride the 585, I'm reminded why I love it so much. It just disappears beneath me. Even with 25s (25s!! How could you ride on 25s??), it just floats.

Thanks for the umpteenth time, Dave T., for parting with it!

My 585s are my daily riders. I see no reason to change. Maybe someday but today is not that day.

A bit dusty but getting this one and myself ready for a quick spin when I saw this thread.

Went from Record 10-speed to 105 11-speed about 5 years ago and have been happy with that change as well. Less fancy but equally functional with another gear for more range. What's not to like?

I keep my 585 Ultra at my mom's so I have a bike to ride when I visit. Every time I ride it, I'm impressed with what a great bike this is.

Yeah, I didn’t notice that. Looks like the headset pieces don’t give any gaps though. This is crucial on Looks, and I assume all bikes with these integrated headsets. Hopefully you’ll find a correct fork. At least you’ve got a Look fork.

Fork and headset work just fine, no problems there. It is also the correct fork, just not the right finish
