A good time to buy Tesla stock? I was talking to an investor friend in the gym a few days ago, and he said that was was going to buy as soon it dipped below 110.

And I certainly would not buy anything in this environment when the VIX is close to its 10 year historical average - there is more pain to come.

I'm still two years from touching my IRA, so I hope a recession is less than a year. The retirement pay COLA helps.

There is some joke in here about the best stock tips coming from your gym buddies.

Tesla stock is a weird stock, that is particularly disconnected from traditional fundamentals, so I would neither advocate for, nor argue against it from a pure stock price perspective.

In terms of a more fundamental approach to valuing it, I wouldn't touch it so long as it's valued at more than Toyota, and even that seems like a stretch. Is it plausible that Tesla will become the biggest and most profitable auto manufacturer? Maybe. Is it plausible that Tesla will become bigger and more profitable than every other auto manufacturer combined? I don't see a strong case for that. What's more likely, Tesla becoming bigger and more profitable then all other auto manufacturers combined, or Tesla going bankrupt?

Doesn't mean the stock price won't go up, but at this market cap, it's driven lot more on faith than finance.

It will be acquired. At a much lower price. And then, basically, shut down.

Musk just took F you money out of it. He'll be fine.

I would not touch $TSLA with a ten foot pole. Little Rocket Man isn't done screwing the pooch on his newest acquisition which has everything to do with why $TSLA is in the tank. Also if a Recession does come then the demand will go even further down.

The Tesla customer is immune to recession.

Agree. A few considerations:

1) Musk doesn't necessarily have shareholders' long term interest in mind when he makes decisions, which can seem at a whim.

2) EV competition is just getting started. Every auto mfr will have a EV lineup from trucks, SUVs and cars. The one leg up/advantage Tesla has and maybe their future is battery production and EV charging infrastructure, which is way behind in terms of demand as all the new EV vehicles come on-line.

I suggest investing in Tesla if you have set aside a certain amount for speculation - wouldn't consider it as part of any core investment.

It's going to be interesting to see how Musks swing to the hard right impacts his Tesla customer base. A lot of those folks could easily be buying EVs from BMW or Merc.

Agree that Tesla's most likely future is as an acquisition target.
