Not sure which ride I liked better.
One of the harder climbs in southern ontario. or my daughter cruising the hood on the bike I helped build her. |

Me and four other riding buddies rode from Houston to Austin last Saturday for a total of 156 miles. The weather was great though it got a bit warm during the afternoon and the wind was crossing our route most of the day. It did get a bit gusty after our stop in Bastrop. The ride was fairly pleasant up to that point when we stopped at Buccee’s for lunch. After that, the remaining 30 miles was a slog due to the wind, sun and bubba’s in noisy pickup trucks zooming by us on the way to Webberville. Tip of the hat to my riding buddies. I couldn’t ask for better. Btw, my newish Garmin 130 died with 22 miles to go which was really disappointing. I expected better battery life out of that thing.

Round trip LA-SD
I rode down on Sunday, a couple of clubmates joined me for portions of the ride, one of whom had a pass for access to Camp Pendleton and the guard on the gate let me through with him. Since I started early the section to Long Beach (not exactly scenic) wasn't bad.
Rode back yesterday solo. Brutal headwind nearly the entire time. Had to ride the 5 miles on I-5 since I couldn't get into Pendleton, but upon exiting the gate to the separated bike path was closed for military exercises…back on the interstate for another [miserable] 12 miles. Through Long Beach to Torrance etc. in rush hour. I'd do the ride to SD again, but if I did I'd take Amtrak home. It was pretty in Newport Beach, though. |

Nice! what did they say at Pendleton? It was always just a proof of ID to pass through, so i am curious what is now needed. I have done that same freeway stretch and it was awful, so much debris! Glad you had a good time

Unfortunately for me, you apply for that pass at the Oceanside (south) gate. I guess I could have gone through that process on my way back but I'd been told it can take up to an hour, and since I wasn't planning to doing the ride again in the next 12 months I didn't want to spend the time. |

So what does your plan for that ride look like? Start in Houston and someone in a van/truck meets you Austin for the ride home, or do you spend the night and head back home the next day?

Two spouses each drove to Austin and carried our overnight bags. We spent the night and did the Sunday morning group ride from Mellow Johnny’s. When we returned from the ride, Lance Armstrong was there recording The Move podcast on the shop floor. After that, we loaded up the bikes and drove back. Riding back to Houston the next day would be bad ass. We should definitely try that. |
