I wore shorts, leg warmers, wool socks, road shoes and booties. On top I had a light wool baselayer, arm warmers, race jersey, and rain jacket. Took the rain jacket off on the first climb and didn't put it on until after 3 hours. Even had my gloves off for a while. Then it got cold and the rain came. Was awesome, I was ripping those downhills on the new bike.

After the first 30 miles I didn't take any more pics - it got real then!

Superior fitness and proper kit can make for an entirely different day..

Glad the new Alliance was in its element though - it certainly looked the part. It and the Argonaut someone was on were my two favorite bikes I saw on the day.

And there were a lot of fancy gravel rigs out there, but I can't tell you how many carbon/disc bikes I rode up on that were either creaking, rubbing, or out of disc pads altogether. My rims brakes had no issues and most of the older canti-equipped bikes I saw weren't having problems either I don't think people are in the habit of checking their disc pads - and maybe just don't care about creaking - that stuff drives me batty.

You felt confident bombing those downhills and the clay corners on 32s? I guess you are a fair bit lighter and more experienced riding cyclocross than this kid.

I would have felt better on 38s in those conditions, maybe even 42s with a bit of shoulder tread. But that would have made the roads pretty slow going at lower pressures and would have been even worse in the cross-winds.

Wallymann looking at the amount of airspace between the top of your head and the ceiling of that helmet, I'd say that helmet is about two sizes too small for you? Got to be uncomfortable!

It's hard to tell from the pic but it was huge. They like to gorge on the gophers in the park. A friend saw one snatch a gopher from the ground, flip it in the air, and swallow the thing whole.

13 stripe ground squirrels? We have lots of herons around here - and 13 stripers. They are pretty shy, will generally fly away if you get very close - even if they are in the water and you are on land. I didn't know they could catch a rodent. Neighbor used to shoot them if he saw them on his ponds, because he was worried about his fry. The herrings outlived him.....
