on my 2016 GSW
I do believe inside the fuel door it suggests 87.

I think might say 'mid grade'..and I've 'heard' that 'mid grade' in flat lander territory=lower grade for higher altitude plus many places says higher grade 'requirements' are a scam..Can't find a picture and too cold to go outside.
BUT if it says '87 octane' and I use '85 octane', am I hurting anything?

Not in the market, but just looking around at VW dealerships today I'm seeing almost zero Alltracks on the lot, or Sportwagens either. Just about zip. Very strange.
Anyone know what's up with that? |

A close friend has seven of them through three different platform generations and has had to order every single one of them from the same dealer as they've never been kept in stock, especially for this exact specs Best bet is if you don't want to wait do a nationwide search and then have it shipped. The only ones that'll be on dealer lots are cancelled orders so you might not get exactly what you want but it'll prob come a decent discount. |

OTOH some engines will adjust timing to suit the fuel being used so you can run lower octane fuel than would be ideal without damaging the engine but power and mileage will be reduced from what you would get running premium. Just remember that an engine designed and tuned for regular won't benefit from feeding it higher octane. |

Same dealer had zero 2019's in stock, and have seen few 2019's at other dealers as well, so perhaps they are just not here yet. Also am under the impression that they changed the motor for 2019 to a 1.4 turbo with about 30 fewer horsepower...and I'd rather have more (think Type R wagon like they sell i Europe) than less. Re gasoline, I always put in the low level regular at Sunoco. Mine runs like a top, no ping, very happy motor. |

Its been a great car so far. I missed the snow a few months ago and we just got a dusting but I did not get to drive in it. So far the new snow tire setup have yet to see any fun. Happy with the car, drives well, looks good... still wish I had got an R or a ford RS instead |

But, I'm pretty sure what you're describing doesn't work on modern engines. New engines will just make some adjustments reducing timing or something to avoid pings, so it will run fine but might have reduced power. |

And if Jalopnik is to be believed, VW is not planning on building a MK8 wagon.
