Submariner watches are still in demand and hard to get at retail from an AD. I would consider a slightly less popular model such as Explorer 2, or Seadweller and try with an AD to get new one at retail.

I tried on an Explorer II last week and really liked it. I think it might have a little more "street-cred" than a sub but that's a YMMV statement. I have been looking for a GMT since I was stuck in another time zone while dealing with family issues this past summer.

If you're open to a watch that straddles sporty and dress, take a look into the JLC Master Geographic. Iterations of that movement have been used for around 30 years in various watches from JLC, AP, and VC - it's a very well regarded movement. The newest iteration is gorgeous (https://www.jaeger-lecoultre.com/us-...steel-q4128420) and can be had under MSRP.

If you want an Explorer II that wears smaller, take a look at later variants of the 16570; they include a newer 3186 movement and have a no-hole case.

I know everyone is trying to be helpful, but if the OP wants a sub they should get a sub. I’ve chased “almost a…” enough times to know they don’t really scratch the itch. Yes, subs are crazy expensive and not the most watch for the money, but the heart wants what the heart wants. And if you change your mind the resale would be much easier vs a JLC or GO.

I think it depends on the type of "want." A few years ago I saw somewhere online a white-dial Tag Heuer that was pretty cool, especially since I'd wanted to add a white dial watch to my rotation. I started to look around, spent a few months searching off and on, but was never able to find one. I then came across an Orient Mako II that looked quite nice and was a fraction of the price of the Tag, so I got that instead, and have been happy with it ever since.

A used Blancpain Fifty Fathoms is a great dive watch with amazing accuracy and a bit more under the radar than a Rolex. Used IWC (3717 ?) and Breguet (type xx) pilot style watches also have a great military vibe.
I’m a big fan of the Explorer 2, but if I could have only one watch at any price it would be a Sub. If that is what you really want, hold out.

100% agree, and I'm in that camp: once my subconscious decides what it wants, that choice becomes an eventuality, regardless of how many alternatives I need to go through to get there. But, but, but - not everyone is built like that, so it's worth tossing alternatives out there

Put another way: for some, Moots will be the ONLY titanium bike that stacks up, whereas others are more discerning.

For no small number the tech sales bros I’ve known, impressing the hookers in Las Vegas might very well be the most important complication (pun intended). That said, my second all time favorite bro watch was worn by a top sales guy who changed the face of his Hermes (I think) Apple watch to a tiny photo of the relevant part of his W-2. “Gets to the real point” he said.

Couple weeks later I notice the SVP Sales who’s also a founder is sporting his own Apple watch, only his is the extreme sport model or something with a biggish display. He smiles and flips his wrist, all cocky, and I can just barely recognize the form of the Principal Stockholders table you’ll see in every prospectus, where I know he’s listed. “Gets to the real, real point” he says. Likable d***heads, both.

Call me a financial failure justifying my position in life, but I don't think I'd be able to handle a job or an environment working with people like that, where money and personal wealth are so important and flaunted in such a crass manner. To each his own I suppose.

You’re right. Alternatives are always good and it lets you see what’s out there.

Sounds like lots of folks here have great tastes in watches and there’s been lots of good advice given.

Yes, very true and I love Orient watches! Excellent value and not very common in the US.
