I’ve been eyeing a clean mk2 w/ a vr6. Even though I’ve done the porsche and bmw thing, the VW is calling my name.

I had a 2006 GTI in the top trim, first year of the new body style - great car - and I'm thinking about getting another.. Price is reasonable, mpg is decent, carrying capacity is sufficient, 6MT, leather, and the navy blue matches my Kirk

Also had a 95 Passat VR6 wagon and VR6 sedan at one point w some mods - both MT. Those cars were a hoot. And threatened to blow up frequently.

Wish that had been under my tree. There’s just something about a Benz wagon. AMG to boot. Maybe next year.

If you have a turbo failure, or the Nav system goes south, that's not covered... But some of the expensive mechanical stuff is... Biggest concern for me on the 3L is the high pressure fuel pump...when it goes, it can send shrapnel into the fuel injection system (that would all be covered...)

If you need a larger vehicle, the Touareg, Q5 and Q7 are pretty nice options... They will *still* get 28 mpg on the highway, 30+ for the Q5. We're considering turning in our '10 Toaureg and picking up a newer Q7 (2013-2014), will end up with some cash in our pocket and a newer car with lower miles and a warranty. Or...we could keep the '10, have the fix done, warranty applied...and get a good sized check from VW.

But these are different vehicles than the sportswagons being discussed.... My '04 allroad comes closer to that category.
We ended up turning our '10 Touareg TDi back to VW and picked up a '13 Q7 TDi with some of the proceeds. Next generation TDi motor is fabulous, and we're seeing as much as 30 mpg on the highway. I would not hesitate to purchase an updated VW/Porsche/Audi diesel. The Q5 is a nice package, as is the Q7 and the Cayenne.

Had a rack on the roof that would hold another 3... (or the same 3 if it wasn't raining or I didn't need to lock em up)

After reading a ton of info I am starting to lose a bit interest in a TDI

Do I understand correctly?

After the fix comparable MPG between diesel and gas not that different. I will use this sparingly ea. week in the city for short trips....grocery etc. Will use it a few times a month for 100 plus miles or so to get out of the city to cycle etc.

Mixed reviews on whether the fix kills power and if they were done correctly. How would I know this? I don't really care about power and torque per se but might be nice on the road. Not a deal breaker.

I need to use a fuel additive every other tank of gas to help reduce emissions?

Emissions are worse on the diesel vs gas model?

Oil changes are same schedule but cost more on diesel?

If I don't drive much a gas car is better than a diesel? This car could sit for a week at a time since I commute by bike.

Diesel engine in theory should last longer than a gas engine if used similarly?

Tons of 2011-2014 jetta and Golf TDI to choose from presumably because these were buy back cars now out on the used market.

Pricing is all over the place. USAA has a buying service but pricing seems about the same for what I am looking at. Might finance through them though.

Anyone?

Whether a diesel makes sense for you depends a lot on your driving. Diesels are wonderful for long trips, slightly less useful for short, around town errands. Some VW owners are reporting slightly lower power or mileage postfix. If you haven't owned one, you won't notice the difference. In our case, we upgraded from a '10 VW Touareg to a '13 Q7, both with 3 liter TDi motors. The VW had not been updated. The Q7 has a newer generation motor and is getting great mileage...30 mpg on the highway and better power than the VW. The smaller engines in the sedans may show different results.

With regard to a fuel additive...

You have to be careful about where you purchase diesel. You want to buy top tier diesel from a high volume station. Think Mobil or Exxon near a highway, not the discount station in your neighborhood. For long term benefit, you should add a diesel additive every tank or so...it supposedly helps the high pressure fuel pump live long. Every 7-10K miles, you add a couple of gallons of exhaust treatment into a separate tank...it gets injected automatically as you drive. Think once an oil change or so.

[edit] Speaking of oil changes, anyone who charges you more for a diesel oil change is ripping you off. Filter & oil. No big deal. If you're used to going to Jiffy Lube and using conventional oil, you will pay more. If you're already using OEM filters and good synthetic oil, nothing changes. I use the same Rotella T6 synthetic oil on my allroad gas engine and the Q7 TDi. By the way, discussions regarding which oil to use probably generates a third of the Internet traffic, just behind whether quick release skewer levers should be pointed forward or back...

Go drive a couple of similar gas and diesel powered cars. You'll either love the torque of the diesel or the zoom of the gas turbo.

Have fun!

Thanks for that,

Sourcing fuel is another thing....finding high quality diesel that is easy for me. If I was on the road regularly either commuting or for work it might be easier. I guess I should look into that given I live in the city and nothing in my neighborhood would be considered high volume. I bet there is an app for that.

I'd think a diesel would be better at sitting around than a gas car. Gas varnishes and gums things up over time. Diesel will sit around indefinitely. But in practice, if your filling up at least a couple times a year, this shouldn't matter at all.

I was just perusing the VW CPO website and you can get a 2012 Jetta TDI with 50k miles and an unlimited 2 year warranty (gas cars are only good for 24k miles) for like $12k. Seems like a steal to me. Really thinking about getting one - but honestly haven't really researched it.

Oh, and from my memory of owning one, the reason the oil changes are so much more is because the oil is super expensive.

In that case, cheers to all my crazy wagon friends! 83K sensational miles and FAST accumulating more on my S4 Avant (2007).

I tried dearly to embed a pic, but it wouldn’t do it, so here it is for now.

We fill the Q7 just over once a month. With your driving requirements, you might only have to fill up on long trips. Diesel car will have a pretty good range...

My 2017 Sportwagen SE gets 30+ mpg on the highway, averages 25 on a tank. Fits a 59cm road bike in the back without removing the front wheel. I can layer multiple bikes back there if necessary, but very easy to take a buddy riding.

SE tier has everything I want and nothing I don't. Reliable as a stump, fun to drive, plenty of power (and I've owned both an R32 and a MkIV GTI), looks pretty, comfortable on the road, great on ice and snow.

My local dealer has a half dozen new leftover 2018 SE's selling for right around $20K. I'd say that's a steal.
