Most of the people I ride with don't have fenders. I ordered some fenders and one flap for each set and Peter J. White insisted the shop get me 2 flaps for each set of fenders. I'm not going to put them on my bike, they weigh too much.

Geez, in Oregon if you show up without fenders for a group ride on a rainy day you're relegated to the back of the pack. If you move up, well don't.

It rains in NYC, but the number of people with a dedicated 'rain bike' for road cycling here could probably be counted on one hand. I'm guilty of my only road bike never wearing fenders, but the commuter now wears them year-round.
PDW do a set of long leather flaps for their Full Metal units, and they work a treat.

Reasonably priced and very unique…don’t absorb water either.

OK, stupid question of the day: How do you put a flap on the top of a front fender?

Very inexperienced fender user here. Just a few years ago (3?), I started putting fenders (PDW plastic) on my bike during the winter for snowmelt and love how well they work. However, stuff flies off the top of the tire and back into me. I always see flaps on the rear of the fenders, but don't recall seeing any on the top of the front fender.

No flaps on the top/front of fenders; they wouldn't have the rigidity to stay up above the tire. Sounds like you need longer fenders.

How is your fender mounted currently? If you’ve got the mounting point at the brakes like Mr B above, you could try moving it to the front of the fork, which will extend the fender forward a bit.

I have seen people that use a rear fender in the front. Front fenders are usually shorter because otherwise you need front supports. All my bikes have randonneuring racks, so that's not really a problem.

Thumbs up

Try to use flaps that are reasonably lightweight to avoid cracking/stressing the fender itself.

I have one bike with the thick leather ones and one bike with the flexible rubber from the hardware store. I like both, but the leather front one is always bent backwards while the rubber one drapes down straight, which I like better. Makes me think the rubber one is more effective though I prefer the look of the leather.

I think I packed my bike wrong on the way to france and at the end of PBP 2011, my leather flap looked like Dilbert's tie. Can't find those pics right now.
