There's two 26mm lockrings, CS-301 is for 11T, CS-201 for 12-13T first cog.

BUT the real 'problem'

Original Poster writes-"Went to LBS, they said could be lockring, could be freehub... an that I could replace either but should start with some gentle persuasion to get beyond the threads that are not catching."'

Geeez luizzz....this stuff isn't a black art..or maybe it is???

I went to several lbss and they didn't have a 26.0 lockring. The eBay sellers that have a 26.0 know what they are.

I have turned the ID down on a couple to make 11T lock rings. The larger ones seem much more common.

Thankfully I have enough common sense to know not to destroy something to "make" it fit. In defense of LBS, I just walked off the street and the guy tried to help... my query was oddball enough and it wasn't in his wheel house or at least in his recent memory. Now I know that there is a difference and I"ll go back to the LBS mech and tell him what the difference is... knowledge is power and all that.

Now that you know what your problem is, and know the part number you need, E Bay or the Internet is probably your best bet. Unless your local LBS is a Campy shop, probably not much help there.

well...I am the "buddy" who recommended asking here...thanks for all the responses...folks out here certainly know their stuff...and unfortunately, I was also the buddy who recommended "just whacking the thing" and giving that a shot...

note to Dan: don't listen too closely to my advice...

Ebay sellers often don't know what they're selling and will often decline to measure them. I've always considered anything that says "Brev Int" to be 8 speed, the ones that say "9 speed" to be 26 mm, and everything else to be 27. I know there were some Ti ones (26 and 27), but don't know what they look like either.
Certainly, no problem. I'll include a photo of one below, inside of a pair of vernier calipers. I've got some NOS and used in both 26mm and 27mm that read "9 Speed" on them.

As a general rule of thumb, you are right, but there always seems to be a few exceptions to the rule (especially with Campy). The "Brev Int." lockrings are 8 speed, the ones that say 9 Speed are sometimes 26mm and sometimes 27mm, and All other Campy lockrings are 27mm. The titanium ones came in 26 and 27, but specifically stated "titanium" on them, the look and feel of the metal is also very different (pretty hard to come by these days).

27.0mm "9 Speed" Lockring

26.0mm "9 Speed" Lockring

Both lockrings side by side. 27.0mm on left, 26.0mm on right

(sorry the photos aren't the best quality)

First one I came to on list. Is this what you need? Maybe others lower price.

The PMP hubs use a Campagnolo-compatible 16 mm lockring....You would have to get their tool or use an adjustable pin spanner, but they are quite nice....

Thanks for doing that. Looks as though measuring is the only way to tell them apart. I need to get organized and sort out which of my wheels need 26 mm lockrings.

That's an interesting fact. I'm going to log that one away.
