Sure, the bags and other options are great, but not everyone wants or can afford to throw hundreds and hundreds of dollars at a new phone every year, treating them like they are disposable. He's just trying to take care of what he already has.

Where are the "my 20 year old groupset is the best!" guys on this?

I still run 9 speed on 2 bikes and 10 on my third road bike. They all work fine.

I don't think anybody has said a new phone is the only option, just one option.
I have an iPhone 7 as my iPhone 5 bit the dust after being accidentally being dropped from a roof. The 7 works fine and though it's supposed to be waterproof I still use a ziplock bag because I sweat a lot and ride in the rain a lot and ziplocks are cheap.
I have no intention of getting another phone though I do want to replace the battery at some point.
Some good suggestions have been made for some nice cases.

Part of the problem is gruppos don't depend on an OS. The 5 is getting old. I myself do use it for some apps on top of the phone. I see more apps not being able to function because it needs an iOS update but the phone being an older model doesn't support it.
My iPhone 3 which I gave to my in-law is essentially an iTunes brick.

I can't even update my wife's iPhone 6 cuz then she can't sync it to our Macbook which doesn't support a certain iOS and I can't update the OS on Macbook cuz that's old too.

Blame Apple.

Well, if upgrading the phone is not an option, I would go with the Rapha Rainproof Essentials case. Not only you can carry your phone in it, but it could potentially replace the saddle bag to carry repair stuff and/or accessories.

I have a red soul run wallet that will fit your phone with an additional protective sleeve. If you want it you can have if for the cost of shipping to you. PM me if interested.

Waterproof phone wallet recommendation

My iPhone 5 is literally falling apart and has become an inconvenience to use both because the hardware is dying and the software cant be updated to support many of my apps. It's time to replace it and I did that today

If the OP is ok with keeping the 5 make sure anything you buy will fit the size phone that will replace the 5.

+1 BUT get the waterproof one. not the leather or canvas one. also great for keeping other ride essentials in: keys, ID, cash, etc. and you can put 'em in a separate inside pouch where they won't scratch your phone.

Albion makes a great waxed case that has been serving me really well for over 3 years now. Daily wallet for commuting, riding and camping. Tons of abuse, tons of crummy weather and it hasn't shown any wear-n-tear. The zipper is still waterproof, which is often where these things fail.

Try Loksak. Cheap, tough, and super waterproof.

My wife often accuses me of over-analyzing purchases (and I don't disagree with her). She would love this thread.

Plastic snack bags. My phone fits in the bag like it was custom made for it, and you can still use the screen thru the bag. Cost: pennies.

A few days ago I received the Ziplock type bags mentioned in the thread similar to this. I think they are 5x7. An iPhone 11 with a thin leather case plus a wallet (far from George Castanza sized) fits very well. The thick plastic is way way more durable than the ziplock sandwich bags I used with my previous phone. Those always developed holes after a while, usually from zippers in pack pockets and such. Highly recommended but I have not tried using the screen.
