Happy 100th birthday, Jimmy Carter

Observing from outside your borders,I will tell you that, while he had a mixed record as President, he is without question your best former President.

I imagine thoughtful people of all political stripes can appreciate someone who invests so much of their life making the world a better place.

Totally agree. Not a great president but appears a much better human being than any POTUS since.

I heard a good story from a retired NYC cop (and retired Marine) whose VFW chapter worked with our local Habitat chapter building a handicap ramp for the mom of a veteran killed in Iraq.

He and his partner were in a NY deli one day grabbing lunch, and he looks over, and Jimmy Carter is there ordering lunch too. He calls it in on his radio--using whatever special code--and the dispatcher doesn't believe him that the former President is actually there. He eventually convinces them, then asks if he can offer him a ride.

Carter was in town for a Habitat blitz build (these are the full court press days, where they line up as many volunteers and contractors as possible and build a house in a ridiculously short period of time).

So he then walks over, introduces himself and mentions that he's OK'd it with dispatch, and can he give him a ride back to the job site? President Carter agrees, and then they have a nice chat on the way back to wherever it was that they were building.

Anyways, a lovely story told by a good guy (and as close as I am likely to get to a US President). What struck my friend was how approachable and grounded Carter was, and how great it was that he was still giving back.

BTW, if you find older video clips of Carter wielding a hammer, you can tell he did a lot of building with Habitat. There's a particular rythym for the guys that have built a lot--light tap (set the nail) then, three hard hits to drive the nail home. I hear it, and I think of the countless hours he spent building houses for people in need.

I never had the opportunity to meet President Carter but I wish that had. The best that I can do is to say Happy Birthday ! ! ! And thank him for representing what people who are actually human can be and do.

Good luck on finding a politician for whom you can't point out a failure/mistake. For his political opponents in the 1980 election it seemed like his worst offense was wearing a cardigan.

Ha. I really only had R. Crumb in mind when I wrote that, missed the potential bike brand & model allusion. Though I did have tiny misgivings about making what some might consider a Grateful Dead reference following a picture of him wearing an Allman Brothers Band t-shirt. Perfection eludes us all.

I agree with the others, Jimmy Carter absolutely was the finest person to ever hold the office of POTUS.
He was too trusting to be a better politician. If you have no bad intentions in your own heart, it's difficult to see it in others
