I commute in an older version of these (no vents) throughout the winter. 10mi each way. Work well: wind resistant enough to be good down to around freezing with long undies and you can cinch them up below your knees if it gets hot. Fairly fitted and stretchy but normal enough looking to not feel like a weirdo in the grocery store. Held up well over two years of commutes.

Reddit turned me onto the $35 Wrangler ATG pants as a budget MTB pant option. They're stretchy, with juuuust enough room for a slim knee pad and the leg openings have drawstrings.

They're now my go-to commuter pant as well.

Those would have been my suggestion. Lots of nice details like the absence of a seam in the "saddle-adjacent" area and the reflective elements on the inside of the leg. Some on sale right now, too, if you don't mind orange … I mean "brick."

Late to the party but also enjoying the Wrangler ATGs for cooler riding. The attached belt could be wider but I’ve just chosen to wear separate loop belt over the top.
